This isn’t new. More importantly this isn’t new to the Astros or Astros pitchers. It was known that Diaz didn’t really like catching, that it wore him out and he preferred swinging the stick. Brown knew that - and that is why he insisted on signing the back up catcher that he did. Everyone inside the organization knew that game planning would take a big hit. I am not saying it isn’t worth trying Diaz behind the plate - I have always viewed him as someone you can put behind the plate 80 times a season in his prime. Having said that - Diaz isn’t the Astros biggest issue - he is one leak in a roof full of leaks. What is frustrating is that they will not address the leaks. Instead they keep trotting out the same players and plans.
I don't think a lot of fans comprehend how much mental s!!t catchers have to deal with. Then they spend the rest of their time trying to figure out how to hit other pitchers.
Right - or they could do what a smart or progressive organization would do - play Caratini more behind the plate. Sit Diaz a week to get a break and play him at first and DH when Alvarez is in the field. Instead we get Diaz trotted out there day after day and Abreu and Singleton at first. I swear to God the Astros manager and the morons sitting next to Crane in his box have cost the Astros ten games in 1/3 a season.
