He was always going to be a one year rental. Unless he wants to take a team friendly one or two year discount. But that's not in his DNA.
I'm certainly happy to keep Nico around, but can't say with confidence I love this. CJ was slinging around to pretty much everybody. The elite QBs usually have revolving doors.
I don't mind it because of the length. We have the money to spend on the short term. Is it a bit of an overpay? Yes. He probably should have gotten around $20 mil.annually, but we have the money to spend, so I can't complain. It will definitely look like an overpay this season, just due to the quality of our wr corps.
If there was going to be an extension prior to the season, this seems like the best possible deal the Texans could make. IMO, getting this done prior to Justin Jefferson was important. The bar will be raised for everyone after he extends. Diggs was never going to be more than a one-year rental regardless of whether Nico extended or not. I just want him to be a "contract year" player for his one season here. The truly important thing is the $52 million guaranteed, which makes me a little uncomfortable but is very reasonable in the WR market for a player like Nico.
This is a reasonable deal and ensures continuity with the passing game for a few more years. Good job, Nick.
One good year, I repeat one good year and he gets 24 Million..wow you don’t need to spend 24 million to get Nico Collins type production when you have Stroud… I’m sorry, but Stroud makes receivers look good…Stroud made Noah freaking Brown look like AJ Brown for a couple weeks… Diggs is now for sure a one year rental and I doubt he’s happy about that…Argh, we gave up a 1st! but I’m no GM, I guess I’ll trust our GM…
Does this extension begin after this coming season? Or does it replace it? If it gets added on to his current contract, then that's great. That means we get him for cheap one more year, and then at $24MM a year for 3 years following that. As others mentioned, assuming last year wasn't a fluke, with other big time WR about to get paid, that will look like a deal in 2 years.
Let’s get this right, we did not give up a first solely for Diggs. We traded our first (23) and seventh (232) for Minny’s second (42), fifth (188) and a 2025 second. THEN, we traded, Minny’s 2025 second for Diggs AND Buffalo’s 2024th sixth and 2025 fifth. Net cost was- Out - first (23), seventh (232), 2025 Minny second In - Diggs, second (42), fifth (188), sixth and a 2025 fifth. you would do that all day.
