Lol. I like it. I just don't think he's some GREAT actor. He doesn't do much. Probably just fits the role well. I guess we'll see how his career outside of this show trends.
It's a good show. Maybe overrated in my opinion. Definitely not a comedy so it kinda cheesed its way into those awards. It's more of a drama between the characters and their relationships. It feels pretty organic and real, not too over-the-top Hollywood. The yelling and cursing was a bit much, felt like they could tone it down. But you start to like the characters and want to see where their story takes them.
I've only seen a little of this show and have it as one of the shows I should watch more. As someone who used to work in restaurants and was even sous chef for a small restaurant this show does feel very true. After my junior year of college I swore that I would never work in foodservice again if I could help it.
I can't speak to how restaurants actually run in the back kitchens (I'm skeptical that if I went into the back of Carrabbas everyone would be screaming profanities at each other). I come from a manufacturing background, and cooking basically just seems like a manufacturing operation to me. And yet they don't use any software or process streamlining tools (takt time, value steam mapping, etc.). It's pretty basic stuff. If our factory ran like that kitchen, they would fire everyone.
A lot of people who work BOH have said the same, so I don't doubt it. But it does make it kinda more stressful to watch lol.
Also to @Commodore I’m not going to say that every restaurant is like that and the impression I get from chain restaurants is that they run smoother because they have procedures, regular supply chains and make few changes to menus. In smaller restaurants though where there are frequently specials and difficulty with supply chains things can get very stressful. I’ve been in kitchens where chefs have walked out mid shift because they couldn’t deal with the pressure or were so fed up with a coworker.
My ex-chef brother said watching The Menu damn near gave him PTSD...he said there's no way he's watching this show yet, but wants to.
