I hope Mario Torres sues the university huge for the lapse in leadership judgement which resulted in a non peaceful protest which is certainly NOT protected...
One shouldn't have to go to work and deal with false imprisonment and post traumatic issues that likely will linger especially by entitled anarchists some with privileged backgrounds while this man simply wanted to earn a living - shame on the President of the university for losing control

My impression of the issue of bullying, at least at UChicago, is that the main organized groups on both sides preach nonviolence and try not to get into direct confrontations. But both sides also have some bad actors that act out their frustration, or else play the victim. There were some pro-israel displays that were vandalized in the night, for example. There were also frat boys that raided the pro-palestinian encampment to make noise, wake everyone up, call them niggers, and generally try to make the occupation as uncomfortable as they could.

I'm leery, therefore, of media, social media, and presidents trying to characterize the protests as antisemitic and not discuss the islamophobic misbehaviors in the same breath. Tensions are high, people have some hard things to say about the other side, there are some actors who step over the lines and there is advantage for both sides to highlight any insult paid them.

Maybe the climate is different at other campuses. But at UChicago at least, I plain don't believe the students are antisemitic or islamophobic. But it is a convenient accusation to try to delegitimize your opposition.

Out of pure curiosity, no b.s. no nothing:

Where would you like your kids to go to college?

As of now, probably Cambridge/UK or Oxford. But they have 10+ years from now.

Did the England Tour when I was a junior in HS (this was in '91 fall or spring '92)...Oxford was a bit too posh and poof...Cambridge would have been awesome, the docent or whatever he was called who showed us around asked my AP teacher if there were any "Cambridge people" in the group of 20...She said "yeah", he said "the blue eyed kid in front and the girl next next to him?" She said "yeah". Coulda happened, just never did. Plan II at UT was pretty great though, amazing education all the way around.

My wife is British; we both studied there (in my case, only briefly). Very unique place. Feels like places like Harvard (before the current lunacy) were modeled after these.

Someone should tell that kid if he is so pro-Hamas, he should not be wearing shorts. That is against Hamas enforced strict sharia and a punishable offense, a beating and jail time. Not really a good idea in West Bank either.

I was from Houston, Texas. I visited a lot of the NE schools (Harvard, Williams, NYU, Princeton, bs etc...)

There's no way in hell I could have gotten along with most of the people there, not at age 18. I loved Stanford, that would have been my dream. Too damn expensive (no way I could ask my parents to do that, yet we had a bit too much money to get much financial aid)

Stanford probably great if one wants to get into tech/entrepreneurship. One of my friends co-sponsored the D school. I like IDEO. My wife did some stuff with them. I hired some ex-IDEO people.

Again, the current craziness turns me off, but in general, I still believe it's a great time in the life of young people, still enjoying some freedom, and the power of youth.

The actual stuff you need, you could probably almost all learn online, but that would just mean isolation, which makes people sad. College is more about social interaction than just about learning.

I just want my children to be safe, happy, not get indoctrinated with nonsense, and learn something they are passionate about.

Probably good to study in a few different countries, like I did.
