Its not about punishing. Its about removing the threat (HAMAS and its infastructure) . HAMAS's defensive strategy is to kill palestinians or get them killed and hope the international community makes isreal stop. Palestinians support HAMAS and this defensive strategy

 

And any moment Hamas is not under attack, they replenish their own offensive weapons to kill more Israelis. Their whole reason for being is to murder Jews.

So all the "ceasefire" people achieve is prolonging the endless spiral of violence. It's like giving Hitler a ceasefire in late 1944 so he could build his genocidal troops up again.
