I've put down sick/injured animals before, and it's not something to brag or take lightly. Only dog, my grandma's last dog, was old and unhappy, we went out and sat around for awhile, had a good talk...and I shot her in the head, I cried the whole time.
Damn, I could never do that. Not judging, but just wondering, why not (selfishly) let someone else handle it who has no emotional connection to the animal?
These are the stories you expect when they mention hard choices on the farm, but that wasn't at all what happened. BTW, totally read the first time as you taking your grandma out and talking to her before shooting her in the head.
If it has to be done, do it yourself. Why put a dog (emotionally attached) through a trip to a strange place and deal with strange people (ie a vet office?)

That dog owner, my grandmother, joked about that with me for a few years "just take me to the pet cemetary" (that's a spot on the ranch where a couple of special horses, dogs, a pony, have been buried and large rocks placed above) before we got to watch her slowly die in a nursing home.
