Numbers don't lie on Pressly... he may not have the best 'stuff', but his results are only 2nd to Wags. Tags rated Will Harris 5th best ever and Lidge at 3rd... back in 2020. Keep in mind Lidge wet the best all of 2006... https://www.mlb.com/news/astros-all-time-best-relief-pitchers
A good prospect. Montero is probably ~$15M underwater right now. If Crane is saying they have to dump Montero to buy Snell I think it’s a pretty bad idea.
Snell's gotten a lot of mileage out of that look of disbelief and betrayal he gave Kevin Cash for pulling him in game 6 of the WS when he was cruisin'
Sign Montgomery Spoiler Not sexy enough for Jim? Not enough of an improvement? Just a guy? Or the alleged 7-year want?
I've been a member on this site since day 1, which was 25 years ago. As a guy approaching 50, I appreciate any reference to my youth. You underrate Pressly as much as you overrate KPJ. Postseason history means something to me, especially relief pitching. Compare Wagner's playoff record to Pressly's sometime and tell me who was better when the stakes were highest.
2024 is not 1987. Any competing team NEEDS 3+ very very good relievers to get through the postseason. 2019 - shut down at home by dominant pitching 2020- bullpen was a bunch of wild rookies 2021- ran out of fresh healthy arms 2022- Astros bullpen was a dominant force 2023- pitching staff was gassed. Trading away Pressly to add Snell is a lateral(ish) move where you spend a bunch of money and throw away much of the potential gain before the year starts.
Ah, your one of those types who let team performance fool you into thinking guys like Andy Pettitte was one of the greatest of all time. Gotcha. I don't see a need to continue this with you.
Here’s the deal to make the team both better and cheaper (this year anyway) out: Framber, France, Garcia, LMJ, montero, Graveman, Jose Abreu (70M) In- Snell, Montgomery, Loperfido, Spaghetti (60M) Roster: JV/Snell/Montgomery/javier/Brown/Spaghetti Hader/presley/Abreu/Blanco/Bielak/Martinez/Souza Diaz/Loperfido/Altuve/Pena/Bregman/alvarez/Chas/Meyers/Tucker/dubon/Vic C/Julks/keppinger. you are welcome Crane- we just got better and cheaper… Make it happen.
Pressly has pitched nearly 50 games in the post season (all with the Astros) and he has an era of just above 2… and that includes the time he pitched injured. He has given up one run in his last 27 post season innings. He has been really nasty after he went through his first post season and settled down. Mariano Rivera was better in the post season - that is it for closers.
How many quality starting arms do you need? How many do the Astros have? Old man Verlander? Which Framber will we get? How much are we depending on Hunter Brown? Relief arms are great but if Framber has already given up 4 or 5 by the time they get in how valuable are they?
Haven't we been talking about this exact situation for 2 or 3 years? ...and then "a Brandon Bielak" starts a dozen games
Well, we'll need about 4 of them this season because there's almost no quality starters healthy. I'm just not a fan of "hope for a miracle" as a plan.
