Is Alperen Sengun exaggerating his injury for sympathy and extra vacation?

If team finishes strong, and has better numbers on both ends what do you do?

Are we a better team without him? Should we trade him for Claxton?

Jock Landale makes him look like a 6'10 Marjanovic.

It's a no brainer to trade him this summer while his value is high.

Like Shaq said, Sengun deserves a better franchise.

Rockets can build around b****boy Green.

We probably would've gotten our butt spanked by Wizards and Spurs if he started at 5.

so much hatred for a player playing for our team. Sengun being out and the team playing well doesn't mean that sengun being out is the reason, it just means players like green are stepping up in sengun's absence. We can become a better team when he gets back.

I came in to say what jumangeez wrote. We were 4-1 before the injury and could/should have been 5-0.

it is green, jock and amen playing significantly better suddenly that made the difference.

I think they're argument is that those players are playing better BECAUSE of the different style of play afforded to them without Sengun in the lineup (and just more PT for Jock). They know the team is playing better because of improved play from those guys.

I don't necessarily agree with the take, I'd have to see Jalen play like this for the rest of the year. And, even if it proved to be true a SG should be able to play in more than just a 5 out offense. Not being able to play off a post threat is a huge flaw.

All 3 were already playing better before the injury. It is hard to tell whether they are just keeping up that form or a line up changed helped them even more.

I think the improvement in JG is here to stay because he is not just making shots, I can see some fundamentals getting better as well. He looks to be learning. Some of that might go down, but I guess I believe that he is coachable, which is the most important thing here. We know he has talent, and if he can figure out the shot, he will live up to the expectations of a #2 pick.

As for the effect of playing without Sengun, there is of course a change and offense looks more fluid. But it comes at a cost, that we haven't paid the price yet since we have weaker teams that could not take advantage of lack of our center.

So I was in Rocketswatch tonight and @Clutch made some interesting points about on/off and net rating. He pointed out that FVV has a much better net rating than Alpi, and concluded that FVV is therefore the Rockets' best player.

I like looking at data. So I would say that is so far the strongest "anti-Sengun" argument I have seen.

@Clutch pointed me to a site called pbpstats.com

There is a possibility to filter on/off by what they call "Wowy" combinations. When you look at that, you see that Alpi without Fred has a significantly negative net rating, whereas Fred has a positive net rating with Alpi, but an even slightly more positive net rating without Alpi.

@Clutch's conclusion appeared to be that Fred is our best player, and that it should be very questionable if Alpi deserves the max. I don't want to misquote, but it seemed like @Clutch would rather spend the money on other players and have a rim protector/lob threat kind of center at a significantly lower amount of money spent on that center.

I have been thinking a bit about that data, however, my conclusions are partly different from @Clutch's:
    • At this point, I think it is fair to say that Fred is the most important player for us to win. He unlocked Alpi, he organizes our defense, he is the veteran leader. The data presented by @Clutch confirms that impression to me. Doesn't necessarily mean that Fred is the "best" player, but I think at this point, he is the most important one to get us wins.
    • I would argue that Alpi's negative net rating without Fred has more to do with our defensive concept/coordination apparently completely falling apart when Fred is not there to organize it on the court. I don't know what exactly happens, but when you look at the opponent's FG %, it goes up massively when Fred is not there.
    • The other thing I would point out is, nobody doubles or triples Fred. Almost every team doubles or triples Alpi at this point.
    • Finally, Alpi is 21. Still developing.
But anyway, I thought it was an interesting data point @Clutch pointed out. Any opinions on this?

Wrong. JaeSean Tate is obviously the Rockets best player and should have the max contract. There you go.
