He's a year older and nowhere near as good as Sengun offensively. Barnes is more complete player right now with higher floor imo, but picking him over Sengun is not a sure thing.
Ah right, it was a draft day decision, wasn't it? Good point. They still could've made a move for an extra first-round pick, depending on who was available. But it would still probably not be as good of a haul as Jalen Green and Sengun.
I don't know what "defensive star" exactly means but JJJ was THE DPOY last year and I wouldn't pick him over Sengun either.
When I say defensive star, I mean he is someone that can lead the team as its defensive anchor. At the same time, he is already a good offensive player. IMO he could easily become the next Kawhi Leonard.
The rumour is Rockets tried to get a pick to draft Alp as early as #6. Seems lots of consideration rather than draft day decision.
Unlike offensive skills which may take years to hone, defensive stars usually show their defensive abilities right from the beginning. Look at players like Mobley, JJJ, and our own Amen. They looked like good defensive players from day one. Barnes may improve to be a very good defensive player. But it's not likely that he will be the kind of guy you can point to as your defensive anchor. On offense, he has improved a lot from season 2 to season 3. Is he close to his ceiling? Hard to say. Sengun is also not going to be a defensive anchor. But his offensive upside is better than Barnes. Overall, I'd take Sengun over Barnes but I can see why some people would prefer Barnes. I just don't agree with "not even close" or "I can't believe ..." kind of thinking.
It is not hard to get into the HOF these days, if Bernard King never obscenely abused anyone, he would have a chance as well. So no beating and assaulting people on the record.
I’m sorry wasn’t paying attention….was watching Scottie Barnes in the All-Star game that doesn’t have Sengun. Mobley would have been in if not injured. Barnes Mobley Sengun Cunningham Wagner Not only is Barnes an all-star, he was ROY. Gotta love hometown spice.
Scottie Barnes would be going #1 for sure…do it all wing who was ROY, made the ASG as a replacement, and is averaging 20, 8, and 6 shooting 35% from deep on 5 attempts he’s even averaging 1.5 blocks a game too
Talent and potential are all well and good, but if in Year 3 as a score-first shooting guard, you're regressing as a scorer, cannot hit an open 3-pointer, cannot score efficiently and aren't contributing in other areas, I think you'd be hard-pressed to make a legitimate argument that guy is very likely reach "superstar caliber." You could make a strong case for 3-4 guys at that top spot still, but Jalen is not one of them. I appreciate the optimism, but Jalen is much closer to bust territory than he is "should have gone first overall" territory.
I generally agree with this. I think Barnes is likely the No. 1 guy, but you could make a decent case for Sengun and Mobley. Wagner's around that top 5 somewhere for sure, and with Cade, at least you can argue he's been hurt a ton at this point. I still would likely have him outside the top 4, though. Personally, I'd rather have Kuminga, and there's a solid chance that Murphy and Jones end up better pros as well. Jalen... probably doesn't crack my top 7-8.
