Yeah...the UK didn't tell India to go Socialist for half a century. Love or hate the colonialism, an irony from it is that India's current and future successes will be anchored upon English being a national language. Will watch vids at a diff time.
When I was in Sri Lanka I asked an engineer why Sri Lanka wasn’t following India in building a hi tech sector including trying to get back office and tech support jobs. He said that the problem was that Sri Lanka’s education was hampered by their major post colonial leader Bandaranaike, he emphasized Sinhalese culture and almost all education was in the Sinhalese language rather than English. This crippled Sri Lanka’s ability to participate in the global economy and led to a brain drain. It also exacerbated tensions with the minority Tamils and led to decades of brutal civil war.
Gandhi wrote about it and if you had read it you’d know that. Go read what he wrote about pre-Britain India. India was actually on its way to becoming an industrial powerhouse without Britain. You’re busy talking about India’s peak rank. We’re not talking about that. Can you show me where and why you’ve been critical of US involvement in the UAE? Would love to see it. Stop acting like our leaders want to be friends with you. They want your weapons and your protection in exchange for money -that is all. Chinese, Russian and American businesses all welcome here. They do not want your base here and you would kill them if they said it openly. We don’t need you to protect us, you will just not allow anyone else to protect us. We’ve been here when you were selling weapons to both sides of one war, this propaganda you’re spewing is hollow to anyone who’s paying attention. Next you’re going to tell me you guys are here to spread democracy lol. You’re taking their PR as though it’s an objective truth because you do not understand middle eastern politics. I’m not trashing the US stop acting like a mainstream news anchor. I’m telling you that your government is robbing you over here. I care about the citizens. Obviously I have no patriotism for another country (nor mine for that matter). You keep making it up in your head that I’m defending Dubai and trashing the concept of America because that helps you feel better about it go ahead. I’m here to help Americans know that they deserve better. I’m trashing your deep state and government as everyone in your country does on a daily basis. It’s as American as apple pie.
You support the government that insists on the suppression of my speech and you want me to take that as though things are not great here? Or are you seriously going to act like your government would support a democracy here? If so, let’s just stop discussing because you’re on the very extreme side of things. We know freedom of speech is great and we will get it once you’re gone and your puppets go into hiding in NY. In the mean time we spent on industry, infrastructure, food and security. How crazy of us, we must hate freedoms like George Bush taught you.
Yo I have no interest in discussing with you because your views are very extreme. I’ll answer this question and let’s politely just end it there thanks. Oh I’m not going to prove to you that India was one of the richest countries in the world, that’sa waste of time and judoka already posted plenty in that regard. I don’t waste my time researching things everyone knows. As for industrialization, go do some reading: https://eugeneinliberia.wordpress.com/book-reviews/understanding-power-the-essential-noam-chomsky/ snippet:
It is always “debated” I.e. stated in western academia that the colonized benefited from the colonizer. If England can go from warlords to industrial powerhouses, what would stop Indians? Are they more savage? the summary of all those debates is: those savages need to be tamed. it’s all horse ****. Humans are all equal and all overcome and get overcome by the same things.
Like if you support BTC as you do, you should convert all your assets to BTC and only use BTC? Huh? Ukraine government is fighting for its people? You think they should just allow Russia to conquer their land and people? Yes. We aren’t sending US troops to Ukraine so it clearly isn’t an existential threat. We are sending aid and munitions against a US enemy. I’m glad our leaders aren’t as naive as you.
The debate has nothing to do with a justification of colonization. It has to do with the decline in economic productivity and breakdown in social cohesion in India at the time England had a 50-100 year head start on industrialization compared to the rest of the world. Indian GDP per capita (from wikipedia) World GDP per capita PPP India was ruled by multiple competing principalities following the decline of the Mughals but pre-UK rule. If the Mysore Sultanate had the iron, the Nizam of Hyderabad had the coal, the Marathas had the lumbar, no one country would have had the ability to use the resources of the other rival. And even if the Mughals continued to rule, we can look at the Ottomans as to an example of it is not enough to have the resources but also the technology necessary to exploit them. The Ottomans were late to the industrialization game, and British industrial output kneecaped many established economies outside of the US during the 1800s. And how could you compete with the British when they were able to get raw resources at a discount from the Raj, Canada, Australia, South Africa, East Africa, and New Zealand and manufacture those raw resources into valuable goods at scale on the UK island only to resell them across the glob. The UK was at a unique advantage due to its colonial holdings directly increasing the wealth for the Island nation pre-Raj. The UK had the forests, coal and iron mines and no other government to compete with when the technology was discovered. India was not a unified nation before the colonization process. Its unified zeniths under the Mughal's ("the Moslem invaders") and Maurya (2000+ years ago) was before industrialization could have occurred unless it was the Mughal's inventing it. France had the same advantages of the UK in the 1800s, but following Napoleon France had both social unrest and invasions by the rising Prussians that the British did not suffer from. The UK spent the 1800s just exploiting and enriching themselves, completely unaffected by the continents ongoings as long as the profits continued to pour in. I feel like Karl Marx here. None of this has to do with Russian imperial ambitions into Ukraine, or the US's desire to maintain a favorable trade policy that keeps it as the world's economic hegemon and by extension military hegemon. We are not in the UAE because we think they're good. We do it to keep the Middle East from coalescing under Arabs, Turks, or Persian rule again to keep energy costs low for Europe and Japan. American foreign policy of the last 60 years has been to maintain a multipolar Middle East so no one nation is able to absorb and rule the rest which is what has otherwise happened since the dawn of the Empire (thanks Cyrus...)
Somehow I think you're against support Ukraine because it's the liberals in power supporting them, not because you think war is wrong.
India is also a highly multiethnic society with their own hierarchical customs. English as a 2nd language serves as a bridge between them.
Mathlooom please post on this forum more. I know it can be a chore to presen alternative thoughts to these guys who perspective is bounded on the "left" by that important gatekeeper the NYT.
Interesting article, but I would think that it would just encourage Russian which even the speaker agrees has quite an advantage on the battle field to speed up what is likely to be a major ground attack so as to prevent Ukraine missiles from attackikg Russian oil interests.
Exactly. And yeah Putin is Hitler or Stalin and any one who prefers diplomacy is Neville Chamberlain. The failure of the domino theory the hawks so firmly believed in IndoChina and the Afghan/Iraq/Syria/Libya disaster have taught our neo-cons whether in the Democratic or Republican party nothing. The military industrial complex is always the winner.
Naively may sound good, but let's say you don't like millions of starving immigrants trudging up to the border (and don't just want it as a rightwing election issue) it would be wise to give them non-military development aid that is not a loan.
India is a weird country so much beauty so much poverty, and even though the class system is supposedly gone it still exists. We worked with a company that had our HQ in Jaipur and there was a lower class guy there whose job was to wash out our water bottles, some of the Americans were like nah we can do our own and we were reprimande...NO, it is HIS JOB ! Such a weird country....the people are so nice, they are very proud of their country, but the poverty is just folks walking on by and ignoring it.....and the crush of humanity.....and garbage everywhere....strange. DD
Well you made a good argument which I can agree on why it would not be worthwhile to fight a large war with China to prevent reunification. Hopefully you would also rule out a nuclear war. I assume if you have kids and nieces and nephews you would not want to send them over to fight for Taiwan. Your analysis also applies as to why despite a neo-con desire to weaken Russian while sacrificing Ukrainians and while the MIC makes a bundle, it was not worth encouraging Ukraine to fight for the possibility of joining NATO.
