I had Barnett as my Edge, not a rookie. LB is Christian Harris, Too too, and Cashman. Maybe you can’t get the best corner on the market, but with Chris Jones, Will Anderson, and Barnett all chasing the QB down, we don’t need coverage for long. Also, this is all assuming apy. Which is different as contracts can be front and back loaded.. 3rd WR is a draft of Troy Franklin, Brian Thomas, Xavier Legette/Worthy. All can be had with one of the top 2 picks and immediately give us a deep threat to take the top off the defense with elite speed. You have Nico as a 1, Dell as an elite slot running under routes, and a deep threat. With Metchie and Hutch as backups. With Schultz and Barkley, you don’t need 3 above avg VETS. You need a good X (Nico) a good slot( Dell) and a deep threat. That’s PLENTY of weapons. Barnett/Jones/collins/WAJ?!?!?! Cashman/Harris/Toòtoò FA/pitre/Ward/sting/king LT/Patterson/Scruggs/mason/Howard Nico/Dell/rookie/metch/hutch Schultz/jordan Barkley/Pierce/dare Cj I’m not saying it’s perfect, or even that it’s what we have to do to succeed, just saying that it’s possible with what we have as opposed to your post about only resigning our own guys and then struggling to do anything else.
Everything looks great to me except Barkley. No running back would have been able to run behind our offensive line last year and since we are largely bringing back the same guys signing a guy like Barkley is a waste of money we could use elsewhere. Singletary catches the ball fine out of the backfield so if the running game can't click with him we just have to be creative on offense and only run about 30% of the time. If we actually get Jones Barnett is fine. Of course if you don't sign Barkley you could probably get Greenard instead of Barnett if the coaches want or a pretty good linebacker or safety. All this would require we re-structure Tunsil at the least. I do not want to re-structure Howard if it extends his contract. We should be finding his replacement through the draft right away. He is injured way too much for the contract he has.
Woods saves you 5 million in cap space.ci don't see a wr making 5 million better than him. If you need to upgrade, sure... but Tyler Boyd for 10 million or Woods/Brown for 10 million, i think I prefer what we had. I think metchie and hutch are fighting for the same roster spot. The pitch for Schultz to me is smaller deal, more guarantee. I like him for 25 over 3 with 20 guaranteed. Might be enough to convince him given the QB situation.
I like Barnett, but there's a reason he was available. Let's not overreact to 5 or 6 games; that's how Mercilus got paid. What happens at WR when Nico or Tank are out?
I mean I don’t think it’s a random 5 games. He obviously thrives in this system, and 5 mil is not “getting paid” as an edge. We can’t base everything on “what if so and so gets hurt” What if Justin Jefferson gets hurt, jamar chase, Travis kelce… injuries happen, all we can do is put the best group out there. Dell is CJ’s favorite target, I don’t see the point in spending money to take targets away from him.
Not suggesting doing no external free agents. I prioritize the guys we know first. The difference makers at WR will cost a lot (18-22). I wouldn't mind DJ Reader, Chase Young, Patrick Queen, Madubuike, or even Clowney. Just depends on what the price is. Rankins, Perryman, Hughes, etc. can all be upgraded. The problem is those 3 made only 11 million combined.
Sure injuries happen. With Dell's size it’s highly probable. If you're asking to rely on him it’s a leap of faith. He hasn't made it 15 games before. They need more weapons. Rookies are hard to project and veterans cost a lot of cap space.
I think Nico, Dell, Schultz, Barkley, and a draft of any (Brian Thomas/ Troy Franklin/ Xavier worthy/ or Xavier Legette) is a TON of weapons. It is doable with our cap space as well as having a line of Barnett/Chris jones/collins/WAJ. with what I proposed our only weakness is #2 corner and overall depth. But we need to get into win now with starters soon while our best players are making Pennies. If you wanna build avg depth year after year and then wonder why we haven’t won anything by the time CJ commands 50 mil then you’re entitled to that opinion, we just differ on it.
Just saying there's a lot of risk there. It's possible Dell is the kind of player who gives you 10 games a year with his size. You lose a WR and that makes it easier to neutralize the other one. My fear with Barkley is that the line is clearly not a good run blocking line. You may be wasting Barkley in that scenario. There's also the fact that RB is easier to draft where our picks will be. Not saying no, but I would not offer crazy money. Honestly, Ekeler appeals to me more as a dual threat... probably less money...
I think it comes down to what Saquon and the other RBs end up asking for. I don’t really like any of the backs in this draft, and none of them will be better than Singletary in year one and we can’t afford to go backwards. I think the OLine was riddled with injuries while also trying to learn a completely new scheme, I’m willing to bet they improve a lot this year. A deep threat WR will help with run game as well since you can’t load the box as much.
Hey ya'll Stroud and Artest are playing against Puka and Micah Parsons in the celebrity ASG right now!!!!
I like this and drafting Thomas/Franklin would give the offense a different kind of field stretching weapon. I would also add RT to the list of needs. Could you imagine adding a guy like Legette in the 3rd to stretch the field and then add Rd.1 DeJohn Rd.2 LB Wilson or Nate Watson. Best RT in Rd.4 even if you had to use both 4ths to trade up and get your RT.
Legette will need an attitude adjustment to fit in with this culture. Taking plays off on the field is not acceptable and taking plays off from the field because you don't put in the work to get and stay in shape is almost as bad. But this is one where you give him a chance to be coached up because of his potential, but you can't let him hang around if he doesn't buy into the TEXANS culture.
In general, I want FAs in positions which aren't PAID for their position like RB, STs or DB. These have the potential for upgrade with the fewest resources. Use the Draft for HIGH DOLLAR positions like QB1, OT, WR, DT and Edge to get these under Rookie wage scales. But then you have to adjust. I would take several players like DeJean or Bowers if they fall to us, even though not at premium positions.
If dejohn falls to us, this would be a perfect draft for me. Presuming we got a big time DL and Saquon = perfect offseason. IMO.
The early posts on Spotrac had only a minor cost to pay Henry for 1 year at about $5.5M over retaining Singletary for 3 years at about $5.2M/yr. I see they have corrected it, so the idea of Henry isn't as attractive, though I still would be open to including him in the second wave of players who aren't being snatched up in the first few days. It sometimes takes a while to adjust from Agent values to Market values. I am convinced Pierce can still be effective with blocking and a legitimate pass threat. I believe at least some of his problem this year was caused by predictability.
I disagree on Pierce. Not that I think he’s a bad back. He’s just a downhill runner, this scheme requires a back that can see the hole, hit the hole, squeeze through it. Pierce has never had to do that because he just runs through everyone. The blockers are moving laterally, not downfield. I may be wrong, but I think we need to find a back to fit the scheme. This scheme also has a LOT of option plays with the RB ending up running some short routes, so it’s not ideal for a running only back and a passing only back (talk about predictability) so having a back that can do both is better. Again, I’m not saying anyone is CMC, but we literally run the same scheme and you see how perfect he is. We need something like that, not a Pierce or Josh Jacobs, or even Henry in my opinion.
