Well, it's a good thing I'm not talking about him being the DC or having any playcalling duties.

Can he teach? Maybe, maybe no? But it's not a horrible idea, sorry.

I think he might be OK as a DB coach but the 49ers definitely made a mistake hiring him as DC for several reasons.

I make it a point to try to stay away from losers. If they want to hire someone else for the job then I'm on board.

Just a thought... if we can trade back from our first, it should net a mid #2 and #3...

That would give us 2 picks in each round 2-4 for 6 potential starters.

Looking at positions that are often drafted in 2nd/3rd for guys ranked 2-4 off the board:

    Safety
    Running Back
    Interior Line
    Kicker
    Inside LB
    TE

I would avoid these positions that can be addressed with 6 picks in the draft.

If they like a kicker, see you Kaimi and save a couple million.

Don't waste a premium contract on Saquon, draft RB in 2nd and pair with cheaper Singletary.

Go get Jimmie Ward replacement for 2025.

To me, i would focus interior DL, edge rusher, WR, and maybe consider Schultz if the money is like 8 million a year for 3 or less. We have bad luck finding TE in the draft. I hate subtracting weapons from CJ.

I really hope we do not draft based solely on need.

There is top heavy depth with WRs, CBs and OTs this draft.

Trading back to get more players to fill holes doesn’t necessarily seem like the right move to me.

What is your solution? Cheap veterans?

The cap space doesn't exist if we bring most of our own guys back.

    Let's say optimistically:

    Greenard - 13
    Cashman - 7
    Kicker/punter - 6
    Singletary - 4
    Rankins - 8
    Schultz - 9
    Nelson - 8

That's 5 million leftover. They can resign Noah Brown.

Or they cut Woods and upgade to a 10 million WR like Tyler Boyd.

Now if you're talking restructuring existing deals, now you're eating into cap space for later when we should be even better and more competitive.

I just don't see how the math works. What do you have in mind?

Ok so all of them is 55 with 5 mil leftover for total of 60.
Cut woods and now at 65. (There are reports out there that they can restructure a couple contracts (Laremy and Tytus) to get to 84, but let’s just call it 75 in the middle.

    Schultz 9
    Kicker/punter 6
    Cashman 7
    Barnett 5?

    That’s 27 48 left over

    Big name DL 28
    Barkley 11
Solid vet CB 4 mil (Jackson from Buffalo?)

    draft
WR/DB (whichever has best available here)
    WR/DB
    DL
    RB
    OT
    BPA
    BPA
    BPA…..

give or take… that would make me happy..

Edit: I am also open to taking the 28 for DL and giving 8 to rankins and 20 to someone better than Greenard but I think Barnett is a possible diamond in the rough for cheap and we need push up the middle.

We can always draft an Ammendola to kick. Kaimi is a notch above and worth signing. Same with Johnson. Both are just a notch above replacement with minimal savings for drafting worse. It also frees up the draft picks for more expensive starters.

We should focus on quality depth in Free Agency, not headliners. Save the headlines for when we have depth under contract.

So where does the other wr come from? You have Brown and Woods gone leaving Nico and no one with more than 1 year of experience. You would be banking on rookie WR to give you production. Most aren't like Dell. What if it's another Nico and takes 2 years?

4 million doesn't get you a starting cornerback. That's slot corner money. Steven Nelson is going to get around 10 million. What kind of player do you get for half the money of Nelson?

Let's say it's Chris Jones... like the player, not his attitude... that's a huge upgrade over Rankins. That leaves you short a defensive end. So then you have a rookie going opposite Will which means more doubles on him.

I just see an over reliance on rookies to make an impact at defensive end, corner, and wr.

We also have a potential void at ilb with Perryman.

You can get one awesome starter in Jones or two probowl level starters for 14 each. Given the risk of injury, I'd rather have the money spread over multiple players.

I prefer DJ Reader and Greenard for 28 million than Chris Jones.

    Just a difference of opinion...

Also not crazy about eating future cap space when we will need it. Granted, Laremy and his ridiculous deal comes off the books and they will have time to draft his replacement. Offsets some CJ money...

On kicker, if they draft one it needs to be someone they really like. You don't want question mark there, we saw what life was like without reliable kicking.

Just thinking what positions get valued in the 2nd or 3rd.

Laporta was a 2nd and clearly the best TE.

You know we still have Hutchinson and Metchie, and can always sign another cheap vet reciever if needed. Metchie was showing signs of improvement in the last few games. They need to improve that 3rd reciever, Brown is not reliable enough.

Agree on just signing Greenard and someone like DJ Reader. Draft more defensive players for depth. I would prefer they sign a safety, like Xavier McKinney.

They definitely need to sign a better RB, like Barkley, or draft one in the 2nd or 3rd round. Singletary will not cut it.

Cut Woods for sure to free up some cap. Schultz might be gone, and thats only because of cost. Don't think for a second he is going to give a discount to stay, he'll take the most money. If need be, restructure Tytus only, but would prefer to not do that.

It’s a no to redoing Howard’s contract for me and signing an expensive running back when we have a crummy run blocking line. Sign a big time DT and DE and use your draft pick 1 on a cb and a later draft picks on safety and lb. Resign Schultz and kicker/punter, and singletary. We got beat over the top a lot, but it was more on the front seven than the secondary. Demeco wants to rush 4 like San Fran. DL is the most important group to take care of this year. We will need to utilize more 1 year prove it deals to fill the gaps. If the Texans take this approach along with restructuring Tunsil the money works. Stroud threw for over 4000 yds missing 2 games and missing dell for over half the season. He also had an injury plagued offensive line. Building the defense to SF/KC level should our goal this off-season.
