He needs to work out with Demar, Jimmy Butler, Booker this off-season and fine tune the 15ft middy. Seems like maybe focused too much on the stepback contested 3 the last couple of years but I can't blame him too much. The stepback 3 has been over glorified by the likes of Harden and Steph making it look otherworldly easy when in reality it might be the hardest shot in all of basketball. I have doubts if Jalen can ever be a true knock down shooter from deep, but I'm confident that when he stops jumping 30 feet into the air on these mid-ranges that it could be a lethal and efficient shot for him to collect 6-12 points every night. Sprinkle in some drives (4-8 pts), some leak outs in transition (2-6pts), and then add in 1-2 threes a game....boom you have a 25ppg night scorer.
That cross over step back midrange and 3 is what will make him a star. Give him time. Westbrook was never able to do the stuff that Jalen Green can do in the half-court. He has more bag. Its the kind of shots you need to win a championship. That's why green is so valuable. he can create his own shot against a great, set defense, where others can't.
So he cut the number of attempts by more than half since January. Good idea, he can take as many as he likes if he’s making 50%. Strict shot selection is everything for Jalen.
Its how he gets going. When Jalens first shot of the night is a 30 foot miss you know its going to be a long game. If he can work up a sweat - knock down a few elbow jumpers and create some contact going to the rim and some free throws first it unleashes his confidence and helps him expand his range. Jalen is a rhythm scorer not a shooting specialist.
''Green only scores in transition and when the defense isn't set'' - Presidents of the anti-Green Club
I don't know who even spreads that stupid narrative. Green has one of the lowest assisted rates for fgs made for a off guard in the entire NBA. For a sg he self creates against set defenses far more than the vast majority of sgs in the NBA. Guys like Cam and Amen have very high assisted rates on their fgs made and are the guys who need teammates to dime them to score consistently. The Rockets offense does not design many easy looks for Green. He has to work for most of his buckets off the dribble with horrible spacing.
When I came across it I knew the anti club member(s) just doesn't like the pick because they wanted Mobley or whoever What's so funny is that only scoring in transition means that the defense isn't set, but they separated it like its two diff things Which of course Green gets large chunk of his buckets self creating/blowing by his defender in the half court Set Defense If Green only scored in transition the Rockets would lead the league in FB points at historical pace
I'm not a fan of the idea personally but it seems people are into it. It's the least of my worries, I know that his career won't go anywhere if he doesn't finish well or make 3's at a high volume, even if he's a great mid range guy. It would be a nice bonus and a good bail-out shot in my eyes.
We have to be realistic with the player. He is not a knock down 3 point shooter. It is what it is. He can make those shots at a high clip, but its all about how he works into that shot. His ability to break down a set defense speaks for itself. The kid misses a bunch of gimme shots at the rim. He will get better there by nature of a more powerful build, but its important to get him going via some easy baskets. It would be nice if Udoka actually ran some action to get him some open shots vs Jalen having to self create, but thats a whole different ball of yarn.
I understand the theory, I just think there are some flaws with the idea that it gives the player more space on shots or that it helps other shots. If you're starting from scratch, start with the shot that gives you the most points. That's the 3 or the finish in the paint (and Jalen gets a lot of FT's). We have to be realistic in the even bigger picture: he's not acceptable anywhere (at the rim, mid range or 3pter). If that's the case and you have to start on getting one of those shots to an acceptable level, I would 100 times out of 100 start with any of the other two. I don't get why we would take an unorthodox route. He's going to get 2-3 times more 3pt shots than mid range shots in his career. Build the best thing you can build. I can't see an argument for why a mid range shot would take less time to develop, so I just don't get why not go for the higher % shot. Just my two cents, I know this is an endless discussion. I'd rather follow the Pacers model: take very few mid range shots, make them at a deadly efficiency. Jalen seems to be going in that direction anyway with his attempts in that area.
I think Jalen is a nice person and a nice player and I believe he will have a great 2nd half this season but in the summer we need to trade him and start Cam next year
JFC, the excuse makers because Jalen can't hit an open shot off an assist.....I swear to god many of you have never played the game. The offense gets him plenty of catch and shoot looks, he just doesn't hit them - he literally NEEDS the ball in his hand to be moderately successful as a player, only when he has the ball in his hand we are more than likely losing in those minutes. It isn't ROCKET SCIENCE.....he just isn't that good. DD
If Green truly is that great, then I hope other teams see it too so his trade value is high but I doubt most GMs are that blind.
Lol this season has been the biggest Up and Down and that is with Udoka actively running 2nd units for him.
