My will to endure has never been higher after reading this comment. I hope he gets a super max extension by Stone and is a career Rocket.
I hear ya. It's just not fun watching a mediocre shooter take a ton of shots every game. That, and I miss guards that were great at stealing the ball.
I do not want him to become the persona non grata but at the same time I am not feeling the vibes long term....
It's hard to feel it if ya don't see it. I mean there are rookies shooting better right now, like Passer and Cam.
Cam is shooting better than Devin Booker and SGA also. It's called roles. Different players have different roles.
Regardless, Jalen isn't shooting well. I'd give him a pass if he was one of the best defensive guards, or was great at steals.
His defense has improved tremendously. Steals isn't indictive of good defense. It's indictive of gambling. Ime wants Green to learn the basics of switching and communicating and not gambling. It isn't "regardless" also. It shows a flaw in how you analyze the sport. Correct it.
OK, his defense has improved. Our team needs better shooters at guard though if we ever want to compete seriously, especially the ones taking most of the shots. Right now Fred, Jalen and Sengun take the most shots. Sengun is 18th in FG%, and Jalen and Fred are 135 and 136th. I was just saying unless Jalen makes a huge improvement in his shooting by mid season next year, I wouldn't sign him to any big money long term contract. This is his 3rd year, and he hasn't improved his shooting percentages. Hopefully we can find another good shooter in the draft to develop like Cam. Cam is improving already, and in 2 years I'm hoping he's much better all around. But, if Jalen can't improve, I'd rather let Fred and Jalen go after next year and use that money to sign a better PG and keep grooming the rest of the young guys.
I wasn't comparing them silly. I was listing the 3 guys who take the most shots on the team. Jalen is one of them and he's one of the worst shooters on the team. My point was our two guards taking most of the shots on the team aren't good shooters. Compared to other players Jalen is 59th in 3PT% in SG ranking.
Its such a fascinating topic. Guys gush and go coo coo for cocoa puffs over baby hooks and hardly want to compare the nuance of the different archetypes on a court and roles like Chow said. Its an "efficiency" argument, so long as we take out all 10> foot shots out of the equation! Now dont get me wrong making baby hooks in an NBA game IS a skill. Flamingo one leg, one hand jump shots are also a skill (?) .. but to expect guys who are routinely launching from 23+ feet and tasked with navigating cluttered lanes to enjoy similar "impact metrics" to a 7 foot guy who operates exclusively around the rim is an interesting way to say I hate Jalen Green!
1. FVV is a good shooter. Most of his shot attempts are 3 pt shots and his actual 3 pt percentage is good. He's a poor finisher due to his size. But his poor scoring from inside the three point line is more than made up for with his actual pg abilities. 2. Jalen Green is a streaky shooter who is 21. If our starting sg was 28 and we knew this is all he's going to be, then we need to upgrade. And the issue with the efficiency stats that your bring up is you are directly using them to express how our two rookies are better scorers now which is the gist of your flaw in how you analyze. Hence why I can show you how Cam is scoring better than many of our current stars in the league. Have you seen Cam's scoring possessions vs Green's? Green is behind FVV is the primary ball handler. He's often the point of attack against set defenses already preplanning guarding Green's driving lanes. He has to pull out a lot more advanced stuff for his buckets even when you include Jalen's rookie year(compare both their rookie year unassisted fg rate). Cam's buckets are mostly against defenses that aren't set. They are mostly buckets of opportunity. Obviously his athleticism and strength allow him to be a violent transition player and cutter to the rim and he's a reliable catch and shoot three point shooter now which is something Green never has been but if we replaced Green with Cam with Green's current role, it would be disastrous as then our second leading ball handler will have more turnovers than assists and I can guarantee you Cam's scoring efficiency would start to plummet when he's tasked to do his thing against defenses that are set and preplanned to guard his driving lanes. Green also at 19 was thrown into a **** situation where he couldn't play Cam's role as a rookie blas a role player excelling in transition and catch and shoot attempts. He had to self create hence the massive difference in unassisted fg rate for both Cam and Green in their respective rookie years.
I'm not arguing your points. I'm also not saying Cam as a starting SG would make a difference. I said this team won't be competitive enough without better shooters. I said if Jalen hasn't improved his shooting, then I would let him and Fred both go after next year and spend money on one of the best points guards we can afford. You might rather sign Jalen to step into Fred's role after he leaves, even if he's not shooting great, but I don't. Fred's not bad, but he's not up there with the best shooters at PG. He's 16th in FG%, 21st in 3 PT % and 14th in FT%. He's also 16th in rebounds. Where Fred shines is on defense, and in mentoring. He's 6th in assists with only 1.6 turnovers per game. He's also 8th in steals and 2nd in blocks. If we kept him as the starter through his 3rd year we won't be competitive enough offensively without a better SG than Jalen. Those two can't compete offensively against teams with better shooters on a consistent basis. If there are shooting guards out there we can afford for the future that are better shooters than Jalen, with better assist/turnover ratios, and are better on defense, then I would sign one of them for the max at the end of next season, and either let Jalen walk or sign him for a minimum, to come off the bench. I say give him a year from now to start making that decision. It's up to Jalen to show he's as good as the others, and he's getting plenty of minutes with Fred as a mentor, and with a new coach giving him plenty of opportunity to shine.
How many young guards that other teams will bite on for a trade do you think have a higher ceiling than Green? Like sure if Ant Edwards is available.... But who are you eyeing? And Jalen Green doing what he does at age 21 isn't going to get him anywhere near the minimum. It's just not max worthy. You need perspective on NBA contracts.
I have no idea who will be available after next season. I'm just saying if we can afford a better SG then that's who I would sign. Jalen has to improve a lot for me to feel good about throwing it all in on him long term. Plain and simple. Maybe he will get a lot better at shooting with 100 more games, and that would be fantastic But, if he doesn't I want a better SG as a starter. As far as young guys go, I hope we draft Reed Sheppard this year. That kid's an interesting prospect from Kentucky. He's shooting 54.3 FG% and 55.3 3PT%, 84%FT and is a great defensive player. He might be another kid who could save us money for a cheap salary to train and mentor who actually ends up getting better with experience.
You understand that "sg" doesn't mean that as long as you shoot well you are a great prospect? Self creation skills? Ball handling duties. How does prospective replacements handle the pnr with Sengun and understanding that teams might blitz you in that situation because Sengun is a non threat outside the paint? It seems like shooting splits is the starting and ending point of your analysis. It's very reductive.
Yup. Id relish in the triggering effect on this message board. It will sustain me. People who have reductive analysis deserve to suffer with their basketball fandom.
