He got tired. He will be cy young candidate this year if Verlander stays healthy enough to eat a lot of innings

When he took over in 14, maybe not. But by the time we were rolling through the AL on the way to rings, absolutely they did. And there were some veteran pitchers on that team also that might have had a little ego

His numbers certainly were not as dominant down the stretch, no doubt about that.

But take out the 3 games after the no hitter (16 runs in 19 innings) it wouldn't look nearly as bad

Heck, to end August/start September he went

    7 shutout innings @ Detroit
    2 Earned in 6 innings @ Boston
    1 Earned in 7 innings @Texas
3 earned in 7 innings vs Oakland
    0 Earned in 7 innings @ KC

He wasn't good in the playoffs for sure. He wasn't typical dominant Framber. But he wasn't nearly as bad as most around here think

The problem with Framber is when he is bad, it shows with his body language and looks terrible. The total meltdown against the Rangers in what was billed as a huge series, with so many watching, is what got people down on him right away. On my list of worries about 2024, Framber is either at the bottom of the list, or not on it at all

    If talking about 2004...

We know now the issues Beltran could cause. Biggio and Bagwell were blamed for getting at least Terry Collins ousted. Clemens was by no means young. Kent is known to be problematic in a clubhouse...

I wonder how Framber would have fared with a change of scenery at catcher... not a single pitch caught by Yainer with Framber on the mound.

Didn't the Mets paint Verlander as 'diva'?

Yes that was unbelievable given how poorly he performed down the stretch. Dusty was such a train wreck down the stretch. So frustrating!

Of those give me Bellinger, Soler, Belt, Snell or I'm good with what we have. Yeah- the other guys are upgrades but not a big enough deal from whoever else is at their position to justify the cost. Unless you want to bring over Chapman on a deal that makes sense to you with the idea that Bregman is definitely gone, and commit to playing Yordan in LF at least 1/2 the time while also sitting Abreu 25% of the time. That way you could have Chapman get 500 AB's while rotating between 3B/1B and DH 1/2 the time when Yordan isn't playing DH. But that seems overly complicated. Also- if Bregman gets traded that's 30M to the other teams tax books so that becomes much less valuable for whoever would be taking him on. Why bother with all that when you could make it a lot clearner just signing Bellinger or Soler?

Just because they haven't received a formal offer doesn't mean figures haven't been discussed with multiple teams. The title should read no team willing to pay them what they want right now.

Bellinger is looking to secure a big deal, and no smart team want's to give him that money for fear that he's gonna go back to sucking once he gets his money.

Martinez would be an awesome bat to have, but he's basically a pure DH. Some team who can pay him to be a full time starter at DH will almost certainly offer more than us who already has a hitter who needs to spend a lot of time at DH.

    Chas:
    Projected salary: $15.575M
    Projected WAR: 7.2
    Cost per WAR: $2.16M
    Excess value: $42.0M

    Pena:
    Projected salary: $18.54M
    Projected WAR: 10.0
    Cost per WAR: $1.85M
    Excess value: $61.46M

The projections and formulas are from fangraphs.

Arbitration estimates are $1.36M, $2.13M, and $3.59M per WAR years 1-3. They lump all position players together.

As a SS Pena will probably get more.

Based on this model, Chas should have gotten $3.26M in arb this year instead of $1.875 so he is already behind. Most of that is Chas being hindered by sitting so much in the past.

    I'm hungry for some Burger

He can play some 1st, LF at MMP, DH some, give Bregs some badly needed time off and covers the Stros if they choose not to re-sign Bregs. Burger hit 35 homers last season and I think he could hit even more at MMP. I would give up a lot to get Burger.

There’s at least a small chance that him wanting to be named the AL starting pitcher, and Baker/Brown not letting him, mentally messed with him right? He didn’t seem the same after that.

No problem with him at DH for 120 games.

Rotate Abreu there for the rest.

Just has to be reasonable money...

So Alvarez is playing every game in LF...which they've have made clear they don't want happening on a regular basis.

You are right. For me when I say we need to fo framber, I am not saying it bc he sucks, I am saying it bc the top contenders have multiple shutdown starters and we need to return to him. I am comparing him to him not to other pitchers in the league.
