Somalis don’t consider themselves black and neither do African Americans. There have been long tensions between the two communities with many Somali businesses burned and looted during the George Floyd riots.

 

What?

 

Poorly phrased in my part. African Americans also don’t consider Somalis black. That is part of the tension between the groups.

 

I genuinely don't understand. What skin colour do they think they are?

 

It’s not skin color. It’s racial perception tied with culture. It’s similar to how someone of South Asian descent might have very dark skin but not consider themselves “black” nor would African Americans consider South Asians as “black”.

 

On a related issue this ties back to why modern Egyptians are resistant to the idea that ancient Egyptians were black even though there is ancient art depicting them as very dark skinned. It has to do with projecting modern values regarding skin tones to cultural perceptions.

So.... white people who immigrated to the USA from South Africa...are they African American?

 

It's high school basketball, did they train them at the MMA camps during the summer?

 

This is the weakest ass brawl that I have ever seen. They fought like they’re in a coma and in need of some Red Bulls.

 

That not he way Somalis or African Americans see it. I’m neither Somali or African American but my neighborhood has both groups and I’ve seen fights and other tensions between them two groups first hand. I’m just relating to y’all that even though they have the same skin color and were originally from Africa they do not see them as themselves as being the same.
