Seriously, that's just kooky. Everyone knows it happened because my dad cancelled his subscription 30 years ago in protest after they ran a soccer issue the month the Rockets won their first championship.
Have all the Astros SI's signed from our run including the special editions/commerative ones. That's probably my favorite for obvious reasons
I have it signed by Hakeem. I haven't framed it yet because Clyde is pretty accessible. Just hasen't worked out timing wise Hakeem is too btw and he's a really good person.
Good memories, times change but sorry to see it go. Hopefully they keep the SI Vault available for archives, which provides history and settles a lot of sports debate lol. The Sports Illustrated Vault for those interested in past issues digitally: https://vault.si.com/ When Hakeem dominated Kareem, Magic, and the Lakers in the '86 playoffs. We all know this one
Chris Jent works at a Dodge dealership in Columbus, OH Fun Fact (real): Charles Jones retired as the 11th oldest player in NBA history
Do not google 'Chris Jent'. I repeat...do not google. Lemme throw down my trump card... Cornbread Maxwell
There are scans of most prolific magazines floating around out there on the internet. Playboy, Popular Science, Natgeo, Bigguns…let me know if you need help finding it.
Anyone remember SI for Kids? My middle school had a subscription and it was a race to get the trading cards page.
Sorry to disappoint the "lets make fun of SI going woke" crowd, but this is a case of corporate greed and shenanigans gone wrong. It has nothing to do with the success or failure of the brand, and SI will continue on. https://www.axios.com/2024/01/20/sports-illustrated-arena-group-deal-layoffs Most of Sports Illustrated's unionized staff were laid off Friday after its parent company, the Arena Group, failed to make a $3.75 million quarterly payment to the group that it licenses Sports Illustrated's brand from. The Arena Group executives were hoping to gain leverage over Authentic Brands Group (ABG) — the company that controls the Sports Illustrated brand license — by withholding the payment, sources told Axios. ABG called that bluff and now, dozens of people are out of jobs. ... While the Arena Group says it's still in active discussions with ABG to renew the license, it acknowledged that ABG is already in discussions with other companies about licensing the Sports Illustrated brand. ... The decision to withhold the payment came from executives currently running the company and its board, sources told Axios. Consultants from FTI Consulting are leading the Arena Group's team right now, two sources familiar with the company's leadership structure told Axios. Simplify Inventions founder Manoj Bhargava is the largest shareholder of the Arena Group and sits on its board. He resigned as interim CEO a few weeks ago. Bhargava made his fortune selling the popular caffeine brand 5-Hour Energy. He has a strong reputation for branding, but is not known as a media executive, although he does own some TV assets.
This is when si died for me. From 1971 on, barely tween me got a subscription for Christmas every year. I loved it. The writing was great, the photos were awesome. I waited over two decades for a Houston team to win a championship and be on the cover. I couldn't wait for this edition. When it came and I saw a soccer player on the cover and the Rockets relegated to the same font as an old-ass Ted Williams talking about fishing, well, it was as bad as the Oilers moving. It was more grating when it was clear the Knicks would have been on the cover if they had won. I cancelled and never picked up another edition ever. They caught grief and if I recall, Dream even visited their offices to scold them about it. They came out with some excuse about the timing of Game 7 not lining up with the publishing schedule, but that didn't seem to affect other championships and major happenings in sports. They also had to scramble to put together a commemorative edition when they had a bunch of Knicks stuff ready to go. Slights to things you value in your youth hit hard regardless of what age you are when it happens and I can say I will always hate si for taking away that cover. That said, even if I had kept my subscription, they were never going to last in this media landscape. It was a slow death of many cuts--not replacing the great writers, firing all of their staff photographers and going to freelancers, and eventually going bi-weekly and then monthly and then online. They had their day and now they are the Playboy of sports. Good riddance to a den of petty Knicks fans.
