Sengun/FVV-centric offense won't survive long term

Discussion in 'Houston Rockets: Game Action & Roster Moves' started by Mathloom, Jan 4, 2024.

?

What should we do with the offense?

  1. Don't change anything

    45.8%
  2. Cut down FVV's 2PT shots and spread the wealth

    32.7%
  3. Other

    21.5%

Yeah transition is a big one that we struggle with. Transition in general is really high expected points, which I guess is pretty obvious, even for teams that are bad at it. Westbrook was a good example of this, he was REALLY good at getting transition opportunities because he loved to get out and run. But he was also really BAD in transition relative to others. But who cares? Westbrook is in the 8th percentile in transition scoring efficiency, but that's still better than 100% of half court offenses. So it's still good to go to that stuff.

I like playing to our strengths and also exploiting mismatches, I'm also big on that. Like I said before you can't just go "Sengun scores 60% on this shot so every time he shoots it that means it's 1.2 points." If he's against 2014 Draymond it's probably like 0.8 per possession, and if he's against Grant Williams it's probably like 1.5 per possesion. So I like getting people the ball in mismatches. I love Jabari elbow jumpers when he gets a 6'2 guard switched onto him, it's like shooting over a folding chair. Or even someone like Tate who isn't all that great of a scorer, I like Jaesean Tate post ups if he's against someone like Austin Reeves. All this stuff is really dynamic and constantly changing based on game situation. But I don't think you have to shoot a lot of 3s to have a good offense. I just think you have to focus on getting good shots every time. Maybe they're 3s, maybe not, just find great shots.

You didn't say "3 pointers > baby hooks in winning championships." You said "ALWAYS." Well, I don't want to dwell on it. Your view about Sengun is not much different from mine. Just thought you could have stated your claim more precisely rather than some sensational one liner.

19 of the top 20 scoring leaders in the NBA attempt more 2-point shots than 3-point shots, except for the greatest 3-point shooter of all time.

Only if those suckers knew that brilliant "3>2" idea @Verbal Christ introduced to basketball.

The Heat game was a game answering a lot of questions to this Sengun/FVV centric offense. The Heat packed their defense to stop the FVV/Sengun pick and roll, and we don't have the fire power to punish them. This is one of the worst games, if not the worst game Sengun has played. He got 22 points and 10 rebounds but the whole game he was extremely passive, and I'm unsure it was Heat's defense bothering him or he's having hangover in Florida. At the end of the day, we need more shooters to open up everything. Then, we can evaluate if this type of offense is sustainable in long term.

Did you just go Captain Obvious? Your smooth brain really went to the volume shot argument and even posted a graph to support a position that in the sport of basketball the 2 point shot is a bigger staple than the 3 -- really? LOL and your emotionally fragile ass had the nerve to go "we" in terms of making fun of someone!! It must be sad to be terminally lonely and need to feel included on the interwebs. Lets go back to me being a racist and you ignoring me mmkay! Your grasp on nuance and context is too ... European? ;)

All you guys making conclusions based on games where we are missing two of our best players. Both Brooks and Tari are pretty good at 3 pters in the flow of the offense. The only I see as a problem in the FVV/Seguin centric offense is FVV’s tendency to absolutely dominate the ball and jack up ill-advised 3’s in crunch time.

The Heat also missed their best player in Jimmy Butler. I want the Sengun-centric offense to work, but the reality is that now it's not working as it used to be because we have no shooters. We know if we are at full strength we will be a play-in or low-seed playoff team, but our goal is winning a championship. Can this type of offense eventually lead us to the promise land in a few years? We need to add more shooters and collect more data to evaluate it properly. I didn't make any conclusion, and you don't have to be defensive. Anyway, Sengun is our best player, there's nothing wrong to hold him to a higher standard.

This is the point that Jalen apologists are missing.
