Yao's worst TS was 9% above league average and his best was 16% (his 3rd year). Sengun's best is this year at 4%. Posting the TS% as an absolute number instead of a relative number is stupid and dishonest.

I think stupid is harsh and dishonest is a stretch, rTS isn't a very well understood concept by most fans. But you do make a good point that we shouldn't be comparing absolute TS numbers.

Having said that, where are you getting those numbers? Per basketball-reference.com Yao's tTS in his third year was +8.5% (61.4% vs 52.9%) and it was +5.1% in his rookie year (57% vs 51.9%), which was his lowest TS. It was only +4.7% in 2007-08 (54% vs 58.7%).

EDIT: nevermind, you're talking percentages and not percentage points. My mistake

Centers have a true shooting percentage of 61.8 this season. Claxton's has a ts of 63.2, Gobert 64.1, Zubac 65.1, Poeltl 67.4, JA 69.1. Meanwhile Sabonis has 62.7, Jokic 63.9. So basically if you are camping in the paint, not a high usage 5, tall as f.ck and most of your points come from dunks your TS% will be a lot higher than other centers. Yao was a lot taller than everyone itl, didn't shoot from 3pt line didn't take super tough shots therefore his TS% was a lot higher than league average. Sengun attacks to the rim, shoots from the perimeter, takes tougher shots, doesn't have size advantage over other 5's therefore his ts% is below league average. They are completely different players and great-elite in different ways. Yao's +9% doesn't make him a better player than Sengun because they play the game different. You can compare his relative TS% with Dwight, Shaq but not with Hakeem, Sengun, Jokic, Sabonis.

Yao didn’t take tough shots? He lived in the midrange. And Şengün being alive in the 3 point era helps his TS% when compared to Yao who likely takes a lot more 3s in this era.

Şengün takes a larger % of his shots closer to the basket than Yao did in his career. Yao took a significantly larger amount of shots in the mid range(least efficient shot in the game)during his career than Şengün has thus far.

    % of shots 0-3 FT
    Yao : 33.7%
    Şengün : 38.0%

    % of shots 3-10 FT
    Yao : 36.5%
    Şengün : 39.5%

    % of shots 10-16 FT
    Yao : 23.8%
    Şengün : 11.7%

You guys are discussing nonsense...not that I am challenging your stats or logic but it is like who is better? Shaq or Jokic or Hakeem

Yao was a great center...he had his time...now it is Sengun's time...he is on his way to become a great center...just leave it there...geee people...why can't we enjoy Rockets history, current players and their future at the same time? Why can't we enjoy multiple players in our team?

Im not debating who is better. Im pointing out a factual inaccuracy in that posters claim that somehow Yaos efficiency isn’t as impressive because he’s big and tall and didn’t take difficult shots. That’s not accurate.

My only reply was to that idiotic tweet that talked about TS% where it was implied that sengun and yao's efficiency are basically equal, when in reality Yao completely blows sengun away. I'm a math guy so when people BS numbers to fit a narrative i am not a fan. You don't need to prop up sengun or anyone else by tearing down a legend.

Dude was 7'4 tall while other centers were 6'10 obviously someone like him will have a higher relative TS% he was a freak of nature. Him having a high TS% is more about his height (80%) than his skillset (20%).

it's not about loyalty or anything, i'm thrilled with what Sengun has developed into. Do i think as highly of his potential as a few people on here who are convinced he's gonna surpass guys like lebron and jordan? No, i don't. Do i think he can be Jokic? No, i don't. I also think Jokic is the most underrated and underappreciated player in the league

I said "didn't take super tough shots". Sengun gets doubled even trippled every night, drives to the rim and scores that's tougher than shooting over a 6'10 dude when you are 7'4-7'5. Yao was talented for sure but it was more about his height than his skillset. 6'11 Yao can't average 20 ppg.

He was skilled, had midrange yes but 6'11 Yao can't average 20 ppg imo so it was more about his height. I like him but P4P skillwise Sengun is more skilled than him.

who cares about P4P? this isn't boxing, you don't get bonus points for being shorter. If points were assigned as a % of height then ya you would have a point, but as long as that doesn't happen your point is....pointless

@invocux you should give up. That was very unwarranted. Leave the numbers aside, I mean, saying … because he is tall? Being tall is a part of him, you can not isolate it LOL. By this logic I am the best basketball player in the world considering I am 169cm tall (or short ). Give me my MVP award.
