I feel the same about FF7 remake. Boy, I really wanted to like it, the combat is absolute garbage, and I'm tired of running through the same areas over and over again for mediocre filler quests. I've decided to give it up. It's a shame, I really wanted to like it. By the same token, I won't be playing Sea of Stars.

Maybe Octopath Traveler at some point though, looks interesting, but I just don't want to shell out the kind of money they're asking for right now, even on sale.

He was only around for Christmas so watched me play maybe an hour or so. But he explained more mechanics to me than the game did lol.

I ended up rerolling my character. I started as a Gloomstalker Elf Ranger, and once I looked up builds, I decided to restart. I was only about 4 hours in anyway.

I just got to level 4 and made my way to the Goblin camp. I swapped out Lae'zel for Karlach. Still need Shadowheart as a healer and Gale for a wizard. I saw this javelin throw build for Karlach that is pretty OP and fits with my range playstyle, so I might go that way instead of traditional melee berserker. Shadowheart serves no purpose other than healing, her damage output is so weak. Gale is my glass cannon evocation wizard.

My issue so far is lack of HP. Healing is hard. Potions are expensive, Shadowheart runs out of spells. I'm sitting on a large amount of camping supplies that I should probably use more often, though lol.

Sounds like you are a D&D veteran already with all the rerolling and character builds lol, awesome!

Use camp supplies liberally. I hogged them too in normal and I ended up with over 1200 supplies at the end of the game, not even bothering to pickup any food in act 3 at all.

Have fun man and keep us up, I love hearing other people's gaming stories, makes me feel like I'm part of a playthrough without the time commitment.

Just chiming in to say that Octopath Traveler 2 is really good. Never played the first one but really enjoyed OT2. Great gameplay, stories and an AMAZING soundtrack, particularly the battle tracks. Seriously, some of the best battle music I've heard, and my experience dates back to the original Dragon Warrior. If you are an RPG fan in any capacity, pick up Octopath 2 for sure.

In my game almost all of those people are dead or I haven't encountered them. Shadowheart is still with me. I didn't even know Karlach could join me.

I guess I didn't really need to since I found Withers on my rerun, but I actually skipped over Astarion on my first character, too. I hate that guy. Another problem I run into is finding myself in losing battles frequently. I might be exploring a little too early and get engaged in large enemy parties that are my level or higher.

Like when I found Karlach, I was still level 3. I found some bandits fighting gnolls and hyenas that were level 4+ and an 8-enemy group. I didn't stand a chance. Or when I ended up in a spider den against a level 5 boss. Yeah....bad times.

Neither did I. Did you kill her? She's not featured on the starting page. I recognize Astarion, Gale, Shadowheart, Lae'zel, Wyll, and some other horned lady who I haven't met yet, so I didn't think she was a playable character. I haven't lost anybody yet, but they might be able to get resurrected from another NPC.

I did kill her. I thought I was doing a good thing. Lae'Zel got killed by some NPCs. I don't remember meeting Gale but I might have.

I can't stand Astarion either, the basic ethics of the character are anathema to me. I don't get why people like him so much, although the actor does an excellent job portraying him. He got better throughout the game due to my choices but I don't like him and wouldn't have recruited him if I didn't need a rogue and I didn't want to respec origin characters in my first playthrough.

Luckily I am a bard that can Loclpick. I kicked Astarion out first chance I could. For a while I was using a henchman to fill out my party.

I wouldn't go as far as you, but yeah I didn't really stick with FF7 Remake either. I enjoyed what I played fine enough, but I was also completely fine dropping it some hours in...and I've yet to care enough to pick it back up. I chalked it up to other stuff (e.g., busy personal life), but I do think if the game clicked with me better, I probably would have picked it back up as soon as I could.

I too wanted to wait for at least half off on Octopath 2 (on PC) but based on some praise, I ultimately decided to just give it a shot. Don't regret it so far, though I get that sometimes you just mentally have to decide to hold off on some games. I've decided Baldur's Gate 3 is one of those for me, as is the Star Ocean 2 remake.

I'm glad you mentioned the soundtrack. I'm still pretty early in the game, but I really liked what I heard. I feel like I played a lot of games with good soundtracks lately, and this seems better than those. I wasn't sure if it would continue to be good throughout the game, but seems like that is the case. Yay.

I almost played the first game a few times, but I ended up not doing so (similar personal reasons as FF7 Remake, except I didn't even really start the game). I did play the gacha game, which actually seemed pretty good for a gacha game (though I did eventually drop it because...gacha). It actually made me make a mental note to give the real games a try at some point. And here we are. :)

Just wait until you experience the Octopath 2 final boss theme, my friend. What a treat.

Here is the track below in case you wanted a sneak preview. Note the song itself does not spoil anything gamewise about the final boss, etc., but I have it spoilered anyway just in case you wanted to retain virgin ears until the end.

Spider-Man 2 is amazing. Trying to catchup on games over the break here. Alan Wake 2 is next.

The guy just oozes douchiness in one cutscene that I already hated him. My Gloomstalker/Assassin fits that rogue character already so I'm glad I don't need him in my party.

I just got to level 5 after exploring some of the underground in Act 1. It takes so much XP to level up. But level 5 seems to be a pretty big buff. I still don't understand how damage is calculated, what advantage/disadvantage is or how to get it, what saving throws are. A lot of these D&D mechanics are lost on me.

If you have any advice on rogue range characters, should I do dual hand crossbows or bow/two-handed crossbow? Dual hand crossbows seem to be stronger, but a lot of build guides opt for bows instead. I'm not sure which way to go.
