For the sake of the Rockets I hope Amen gets it together over the next few years. He's got a ways to go though.
Clyde Drexler shot 25% from 3 his rookie year. By the end of his career he was a 36% 3 point shooter. I suspect he'd have been better if it were as emphasized as it is now.
Matisse Thybulle and Derek Jones Jr are two more players that everyone wrote off as bad shooters that would be out of the league and they're both hitting a good percent of their 3s this season.
I think there is a lot to be said for sample size and with having his minutes be so choppy not helping him get i to a rhythm. I don’t really see this as a Jalen Green situation. Amen has a lot of skills that will be +. Defending, rebounding, penetration. I don’t expect him to be a great shooter, but I also think that in the future it will be easy to make sure a large percentage of his minutes are him being the lead guard surrounded by four competent three-point shooters. Sengun (well on his way IMO), Smith, Eason already there. Now the shooting guard next to him needs to be a sniper for sure, but could also be a smaller stature because I’m in makes up for the size discrepancy. I really think we need to find a way to get him 18 to 20 minutes each game.
Kawhi, pg13 I am a Turk and there is a podcats in Turkey, they make two NBA commentators, when the leagues were postponed during Covid, they started talking about the old drafts, these guys are very knowledgeable about the NBA, by the way, when Kawhi and PG entered the league, they had nothing to do with the players they are now, yes these are There may be exceptions, but there are examples.
Jason Kidd, Paul Millsap, Jimmy Butler, Kyle Lowry, Blake Griffin, Rajon Rondo come to mind. Not saying it isn't rare. Also we could get into big hair splitting debates about qualitative jumper mechanics... but meh. Amen's shot is broken but there's precedent for 15 percentage point improvements. And thats just in 3 point shooting for star players. I probably wouldn't have drafted him, but I'm not going to throw my hands up 20 games in.
Honestly, I think Cam is a more NBA ready player than Amen is right now. His jumper is just too big of an issue on a team that's already severely lacking in shooting. Idk why Cam can't get minutes over Tate especially when we need shooting off the bench. I mean, Ime already has Holiday running point anyways and everytime Holiday and Amen plays, Amen is just regulated to the corner where no one is even guarding him because they all know he can't hit the 3.
Oh, and Brook Lopez didn't even take 3's his first 6 seasons in the league then shot .141% the first year he began shooting them (2015-2016). He shot 37% last year
