I forgot who it was but I remember getting inot a dumb BBS war with another poster who argued, many years ago that all workers were going to be replaced and automated and unemployment would creep inexorably upward regardless so basically workers had no choice but to accept lower and lower wages forever into perpetuity, and that $15 wages woudl end employment as we know it. . Just want to say - you got SO OWN3D buddy, whoever you were.
Fine. Than hike up the tax rate for the wealthy and provide more supplemental income either in the form of subsidized housing or just direct deposited cash for low income workers.
If I was a McDonald's worker and was given the choice between staying at $11 and low inflation or getting a 36% wage increase but prices would go up 10%, I think I'd take the raise and high inflation.
I'm pretty sure McDonald's worker does likely not have the ability to analyze it like you did, however, I'm sure they can tell that $15 > $11 and they probably take it.
I think everyone should make $15 an hour regardless of trade. The government provides the rest; food, shelter, ect ..
Exactly. If someone can't afford basic living amenities and have to worry about late rent payments after giving 40-50 hours of their lives per week for someone else's profit motive regardless of how menial the job is, the government absolutely should step in and cover the gaps. If the government then is spending too much money the rightful blame is in the people with the profit motive not paying enough.
I have about 80-90 employees. Our average wage is right around $14. They probably average $16 with tips. The thing about increasing the minimum to $15 is also the reverberation with your “non-minimum” people and the fact that any seismic shift like this in society, will have them wanting a similar adjustment. So it doesn’t really work. my observation about the current business climate is that you are already seeing natural pressures influence businesses to pay more for quality, and these natural pressures end up working out because they end up being geographically consistent with the needs of that area. No minimum is needed at all really IMO. college also largely seems like a joke for many fields. Too expensive Andy education is not acute or specialized. There is a lot of fluff, and it takes a while to get through. it seems like to me, some of the best jobs in the country right now, and in the immediate future can be obtained by apprenticeships or trade schools.
apprenticeships or trade schools = some of the best paying jobs out there, whether you are a plumber or an electrician those guys and gals are making a hell of a living and often they transition their skill into owning their own business. Master Electricians can make up to $50-$60 an hour We used to think trade school were for kids who couldn't get into College.........boy were we dumb
Right off the bat, trade schools often put a person 4 years ahead of a standard 4 year degree in the same field. If a competent kid goes straight into trade school, they can be promoted quickly, which as you state, fast track into sole proprietorship.
yup! and these jobs are here to stay for a while. the money and stability is in these trade jobs. not glamorous but necessary part of a society. trade job + spanish speaker + business acumen = easiest recipe to start your own company.
My former boss and I use to joke about this and how big of idiots we were for getting an engineering degree and getting our professional license to practice in the state versus doing some trade job and making same amount of money for less stress (granted the work is hard).
Worst thing about doing taxes as a CPA is seeing all the people making way more money than me. Honestly though, I'd have joined the air force if I had to do it over.
