I’ve used “Poetic justice” on here too many times, but come on baseball gods lol let them lose to AZ or SD for that extra oomph and poetic justice. Reddick in full heel mode and i love it
Deferred money is also known as basic math. You want MLB to end math? Any team or player or employee or anyone else can defer salary. You want to make more money? Take all the money you're earning this year and put it 10 year no-coupon bonds. In 10 years, you'll get your money with about 50% more. You can say you got a 50% raise by deferring your salary. That's what Ohtani and the Dodgers did - nothing more.
How many of us would be b****ing if it was our team spending all this money? I’m not nearly as pissed as others on here. I’ve always hated the no salary cap model, but that will never change in the MLB. In the end, the Astros have proved over the last decade that a team can win, even create a dynasty, and stay within the luxury tax. It’s true that the Yankees and Dodgers are making that much harder and, if in fact, it becomes a two team league, the answer would be to change the luxury tax guidelines once again to be much more punitive (and somehow include deferred money) or make local media rights shared.
But yea this doyers shenanigans really shows how ****ed up things are for young caribbean players They give 300 million to a dude who has yet to pitch in the mlb while the next pedro martinez is somewhere in the minors signed for 10k and with no hope of making anything near that for a good 10 years. rough.
I don't like any of the big moves the Dodgers made. Ohtani is coming off his 2nd TJ surgery. Better hope he can pitch again because he isn't worth that contract if he is just a DH even with his marketing hype and deferring the money. Yamamoto hasn't thrown a single pitch in MLB and you gave him 12 years? No thanks. Glasnow makes McCullers look durable. Glasnow hit his career high in innings this year at 120 IP. He has not been good in the playoffs either. So they trade a bunch of pieces for Glasnow and pay him a ton of money. I don't get that move at all. I would rather just sign Jordan Montgomery who has made 30 starts or more the last 3 seasons. We spent the entire season complaining about the Abreu and Montero signings. It was non-stop in the game threads. Imagine if the Astros spent crazy money like the Dodgers on someone and the guy had a bad year. We would be melting down in here.
Agreed that none of these players are ever truly worth it... but the Dodgers and Yankees can't afford to not go far in the playoffs (or just miss them alltogehter). This is what happens when either one team tried to be fiscally prudent (Dodgers last year) to avoid the repeat tax penalties and had lots of money coming off the books... as well as the mediocre Yankees who can't simply tear it all down and rebuild. I'm guessing there's also eventually going to be a restrictions to the deferred money loophole that the players union likely does not want to be a common practice.
This guy is 25 years old and made major league players look like fools already. He doesn't need to be developed.
Agreed. Maybe he TECHNICALLY hasn't ever pitched in MLB before but it's not like he's an amateur. He has basically made a AAA or better level league his own personal playground.
I think the player's union loves it. It lets the headline numbers be bigger, which helps them grow contracts for their other clients. Ohtani signing for $700MM instead of $430MM makes it easier for other players to ask for $300MM or whatnot. The CBA specifically has a clause that says use of deferred money is unlimited and unrestricted, and I can't imagine that's something the owners would have put in there - that was player driven.
I would never let another man buy my wife a Porsche. Fk Ohtani even more and Joe Kelly can get ran over in that Porsche merry Xmas
