I’m on season 2 and can’t stand these Stevens kids, so I know I’m in for a bad time in season 3 based on a couple spoilers I saw.

There will be a Season 4 and 5 at the very least. Season 4 is already in production.

I finished season 3. While I still enjoy the show, it has gotten very Hollywood. I don't know if that explains it well. The character drama is pretty soapy, like you guys said, but even the space frontier has gotten quite outlandish. Season 1 felt more grounded in reality.

Also, the Stevens family is trouble.

As the show gets further away from what actually happened it gets harder to tie it into actual events and technology. That’s why it feels less grounded in reality

I watched most of this season while surfing the web...that way whenever the character drama is happening I could just tune it out and focus on what I was reading, then focus again when space-stuff comes back. Rinse, repeat.

While that may be part of it, it's more to do with the drama created from the characters. It doesn't feel as real.

In season 1, most of the conflict felt real. The politics of women being in space because NASA has to match the Soviets, Gordo losing his sanity from cabin fever, Ed going off the rails due to tragedy, or the Apollo 24 mishap. Those conflicts were plausible.

The main drama of season 3 on Mars revolves around Danny and his obsession with Karen. That whole plot line never felt like it developed properly. Thus, it spoils the plots that stem from it. Karen's rebuffal of his confession causing him to relapse into addiction leading to switching teams to Helios, his internal conflict with Ed being close to his ex-wife, Danny being the cause of the drilling disaster.

For one, Danny having admin access to all private comms is quite a stretch. Secondly, Danny should've been pulled from any responsibilities once Ed called him out for being high. On that note, Danny should not have had such easy access to the narcotics. The drill being remote controlled from base camp is pretty dumb, too.

There were a lot of oversights that seem to be there only so the writers can create drama from it. Then add in the North Koreans beating everyone to Mars and the lone survivor holding out for months with insignificant life support systems, Jimmy going into the deep end with conspiracy theorists (I concede it's possible but not enough screen time to develop it properly), and other issues with season 3, it was overall a dumber season. Still enjoyable, but dumber.

Probably should’ve spoilered that but I agree with a lot of that and feel Ed as a skilled astronaut and leader would’ve never allowed Danny that sort of access.

The amount of interpersonal drama they are forcing is also a part of that they are getting further from what actually happened. They don’t have the framework of real figures and how they acted to work off of.

I'm finally catching up to this. Finished episode 5 so far. It's so dang good. But I wish there was more sci-fi instead of drama.

Is this show as scientifically accurate as the best sci-fi show in existence Farscape? Asking for a friend.

I wouldnt say it's scientifically accurate, but the concepts aren't too farfetched to the normal viewer.

If you want accurate, you should watch The Expanse.

Can't wait to see if they do wormhole technology then, looking forward to it.

Regarding The Expanse, that's also another great sci-fi show. Thank you for recommending it..

I hate to even vaguely agree with @Commodore but after watching the first season I did wonder why they kept killing off the men with such quickness. The ones that were left had anger or alcohol problems...maybe they balance that out in subsequent seasons?
