Donovan Mitchell is a better fit for our team than Jalen Green...would rather give a contract extension to Mitchell over Jalen Green for the current market will overpay Jalen Green upcoming new contract. Telling you, Jalen Green will be the next Jordan Clarkson.
I don’t understand this thread. Are folks arguing whether they’d trade Jalen for Mitchell or whether they’d trade what it would actually take to get Mitchell?
Now you are just being silly. This team is already 1st round fodder with Jalen Green adding very little. You act like Mitchell is a playoff choker or something. He's averaging 28/5/5 for his playoff career and made it to the 2nd round twice. He's been in the playoffs every season of his career. Who's makes the Rockets better thru 2025...Jalen Green or Donovan Mitchell? We don't have anything thru 2025 that will turn us into a contender other than Coach Udoka. Get Udoka more talent and he will figure it out. All that said we aren't going to be able to acquire Mitchell.
I don't think anyone has mentioned what it might take to get him, but any trade I'm guessing would have to be centered around Amen, Jalen, and Oladipo for salaries to work. With that level of talent it would probably take a couple of firsts to get a deal done or something. Who knows....I don't see it happening but it would be a fun team with Mitchell.
Mitchell makes us better of course. Still caps our ceiling at 1st round fodder. He isn't an Ime guy. Harden wasn't and Mitchell isnt. He just dramatically lowers our ceiling and raises our floor. Regular season star. But that's it. That's all he'll ever be. Just not made to win. Rockets wouldn't even entertain Mitchell.
I’m not clear on what Jalen Green’s value is to the Cavs. I don’t get the impression that they are willing to dip back into rebuilding mode. But certainly if Mitchell makes it clear that he isn’t resigning in 25’ they may try to move him. I think it’s more likely they move him this offseason than this year’s deadline. But assuming he eventually goes on the market: #1. He’s worth going all in for and would fit our team perfectly. #2. OKC and maybe a couple other teams could definitely outbid us. Mitchell could also use leverage to determine a small group of teams he will play for. Houston may or may not be on that list, but we better get on that freaking list. #3. Moving Jalen as part of a Mitchell trade would be amazing, but no doubt his inclusion in any Cavs trade would be cents on the dollar…and I don’t freaking care. #4. Go all in for Mitchell if available #5. Don’t trade Tari or Sengun
Be patient don’t leap at first opportunity. Wait for a true #1 guard that fits the roster to come available (disgruntled, cheap owner, wants bigger market, etc) like SGA, Ant, Devin Booker and go all in. Probably a couple years off so let’s see where this team gets organically in the interim.
You are right about us being 1st round fodder but Mitchell isn't that guy. Not a total ball hog but still a ball hog. Doesn't play defense so we are not strengthening our defense. Takes bad shots when doubled, plays hero ball at times as if he's Dame (it works only when he's hot). He is good enough to win just enough games to slip away from discussions. As much as i despise Jalen i'd rather keep him if Mitchell is the one we are getting in return. Honestly he's great bb player no doubt about that but 1) I really don't think that he's made for Ime's Rockets 2) You don't win anything with him. I would go all in for Markkanen however. He's an incredible 2 way player.
They would probably counter Caris LeVert for Green. If we were lucky we could maybe get Darius Garland if we give them Green + FRPs.. I don't see the point in trading Green. His value is too low. We are a team that is still a few years from our peak. We can play the long game.
Right. I don’t see the Cavs having any real interest in Green. As noted, maybe you could trade him for like a Levert caliber player but on another team. Idk who would even want him. Most of the bad teams in take a flyer mode already have shooting guards they are evaluating. Maybe something involving Rozier from Charlotte? But that doesn’t work for us. Maybe the Bulls would have some interest in taking a flyer if they put LaVine on the block and tear down, but it’s gonna take a lot more than Jalen. If you are getting in the picture for Spida main assets Cleveland would want would be some combo of Amen, Whitmore, Eason, and FRPs/swaps.
That only matters in a straight-up trade. What we'd likely have to give up along with Jalen is the real question. Mitchell reminds me a lot of Harden. Not in the style of their games, which is obviously different, but in the way they dominate play, often to the detriment of their team, and how they rarely expend much effort on defense (although at least Harden had the bulk to defend the post pretty well). And especially in how they can have absolute monster games in the playoffs, yet bafflingly seem to always come up short at the biggest moments. Pass on Mitchell. From this point forward, we should only pursue Ime-Approved™ players.
