When Udoka believes that Cam will help the Rockets win games - he will be called up and given a chance to be in the rotation. This is really simple. Udoka and the assistants identified areas of Whitmore’s game that need improvement and are keeping him from being a positive NBA player. When those areas of his game that need to be improved - do improve, then Cam will get a shot. Cam being in the G-League has nothing to do with his talent level or upside. Cam was hurt in high school. He was then hurt to start his college career and choose just about the worst program in the country for his game. As a result he is behind others on some basic parts of the game- and he is being given a chance to catch up. No amount of 40 point games will matter, it will be how he does in working on his areas of weakness. I personally have seen some improvements from him as a passer and a cutter - but not consistent enough yet.
Not really a spot for him on this roster, especially with Amen coming back and being prioritized. Might change with the mid season deadline.
So, should we never call Cam up if he doesn't average 8-10 assists? Klay Thompson. career 2.3 assists per game. Should he have had an NBA career?
Cams numbers are insane but G-League is very easy to score big numbers. For example Daishen Nix scored 32pts same night Believe me I’ve seen enough G-League games and so far Cam is ahead of both KPJ and Jalen Green when they were in G-League. Also Rockets are one of the best team developing talent through G-League (Aron Brooks, Clint Capala, KPJ)
It isn't really about assists. Cam has to show he can have a positive effect as an accessory on offense without taking a lot of shots. For example: Keeping the ball moving, finding the open man, finding the right place to be on the court, learning his physical limitations at the NBA level and not trying to beat his man off the dribble with crossovers unless it's scrub time. Then, there is defense.
Those who want 8 assists can keep them. I'll take the points and win the game. This guy is a scorer. Green light. All day.
I don't think he said anything about averaging. If you watch Cam play, you can see the mistakes he makes. Watch the game before this one - the one nobody talked about because there were no Wilt numbers. He ran into his own player (Hinton), both fell down, he got up and walked away and left his teammate there. Samuels ran over and helped Hinton up. That's ... weird. Maybe he didn't know it was his teammate, I don't know, but he just collided with him. He still drives into the paint on guys that are positioned trying to ram dunks on them and gets called for the foul. He still fumbles the ball when dribbling in traffic or in the paint. He also seems kind of robotic in his play like "I'm supposed to do this, so I will do this". The only exception to this is if he sees any opening in the paint. lol. All that being said, I'm waiting for him to get some time in the NBA and see what he can do. He's shown he can pass the ball a bit. Whether or not he makes good decisions doing so still remains to be seen. He also has shown he can bring the ball up the court, but he needs to protect the ball better because I'm not sure he handles pressure all that well. But I'm not expecting him to be a PG, but a guy who can pass off of drives and help bring the ball up the court would be nice. I'll trust Ime on this.
Cam is not going to get 23 shots off in 29 minutes in the NBA. I do want to see if he can play within the offense with the Rockets. But there are just too many guys needing minutes at this point.
I don’t think it’s lack of talent. I believe he’s not bought into something either system, or lockeroom. I don’t think he’s a lockeroom cancer or anything.
I don’t think I ever said I wouldn’t call Cam up if he didn’t get 8-10 assists a game in the G-League. Also - Klay moves the ball, and passes well. He isn’t the primary ball handler but he knows when to shoot and when to pass - knows when to cut and how to defend.
It's scary how good i am at knowing things b4 everyone else. I was CWood out since day 1. I was sold on Sengun after the Denver game in 2021 i knew he was here to say. I was against drafting The Nailman and i know i'm right I told ppl TyTy, Garuba, Jaygup were bunch of bums and they were always "Isn't too early they are just 19-20??" these r-tards have nothing else other than the age argument. It's not even an argument they just say their ages to you as if they just shared the world's greatest mystery with you and you are supposed to crack some code using it. Oh he's 19 then this literally changes EVERYTHING. Thank you for telling me his age and ignoring literally the everything else about him. So..since they themselves can't see the future, can't really tell if a kid has a major flaw(s) in his game to block his progression they get mad at you for being so confident in your predictions, being so vocal about it. The biggest advise i can give a bb head is to ignore the unexplainably optimistic people. "He's just 19", "How do you know that he'll not improve?", "People are giving up on a kid who is 20 SMH" just ****ing ignore these 'Let's just wait and see people'. "LeTs JuSt EnJoY" They don't even know why they are so hopeful about a kid's future just ask one to break down a kid's game, explain to you why he's the future or sth like that. He will bring up some X player's year 2 stats as if every player is the same, have same personality traits, same physical attributes, same flaws, strength. They approach it like they are playing Football Manager. If you don't know it is a football/soccer game where almost every player has a set Potential Ability (PA) or a range they always fall into in every save. Like in every save player Y falls into 160-180 PA range and they have a set Current Ability (CA). If a player's determination is high and he's ambitious he reaches to his potential in the game. If he is unambitious even if his PA is 199 and his CA is 185 he will not. If his hidden consistency attribute score is lower than 10 (between 0-20) even if he's very good he'll be very inconsisteny player in his entire career. The way these people compare youngsters is hilarious. They all think that all youngsters have high determination and is ambitious and the only way that could hinder their progression is injuries. They see them as literally robots. So why did i write all this? To tell you that stay on Cam side. Be a Camboy like the rest of us. Unless the injury concerns are legit and/or he has unfixable tunnel vision like Josh Cristopher has he's the one. Let's just forget about him being athletic or built like a tank for second you should NEVER go wrong with a guy who can create his own shot and actually has good shooting form. You will catch some people saying that "Banchero isn't that good since he can't shoot" these people are more intelligent than the "Let's just wait and see" people but they are still wrong. Cam is not Banchero level talent but he is not so far behind him and i'm talking about purely skillwise. Banchero is more skilled but Cam is also skilled. As i said if injury concerns are valid and he has an unfixable tunnel vision yes he isn't the guy. However right now i'm looking at an injury free 19 years old Cam and can see that we have a Miles Bridges type of talent in our hands. He might have bad habits but i promise you that 3rd Cam will more more reliable than 3rd year Jalen. I'm watching his G-League games and he already looks like a better passer. I believe that he's trainable enough.
