Probably the most ridiculous contract I have ever seen. If it cripples the Dodgers then I'm happy

Unfortunately there is no crippling the dodgers.
They are going to be a Japan sensation and be shoved down our throats in America. they’re not done and will focus on pitching.
If only there were a Japanese starter who said he would like to play with another Japanese player……

If Ohtani has arm problems it will cripple them on the field. Obviously marketing wise they're going to get a solid return on their investment. This type of contract will get a lot of people fired if they don't win at least one WS. I think Yamamoto is going to the Yankees

The Dodgers made 581 million in revenue in '22.

Ohtani with arm problems is yordan. Having yordan on the field will not cripple anyone

that sounds impressive, but what were their costs? Profit and Asset Appreciation are what’s important. I think Crane is held back by minority owners that want a share of profit each year instead of just Asset Appreciation. If he could manage to just break even each year he would be able to dole out bigger contracts. Maybe @Nook knows something about the constraints that Crane must adhere to?

A 700 million dollar contract if he can't pitch absolutely hurts them

I don’t think it does man.
He would still be able to hit and be marketed all over the world.
Dodgers can just buy more pitching.

If he NEVER pitches then ya it would be a negative value deal for sure. It won’t hurt them because they would more than make up for the value loss in other ways. If he does pitch 4-5 seasons out of the next 7-8 then it’s a bargain

I get the marketing aspect but you would think the goal is to win. They've had stacked rosters and done nothing outside of regular season accolades

Fair enough. I see your line of thinking. I just have a feeling that this deal will blow up in their face from an on field perspective

The wild thing is that somehow Trout’s deal might be a bargain now lol

Ohtani with a back or leg problem is Rendon, Trout, and McCullers. I'm not saying this is a bad deal for the Dodgers but there are extreme risks when you guarantee that much salary to one person.

I mean that goes for everyone, anyone can get injured. Having infinite money lowers the risk drastically, to almost nothing

Would rather put your eggs in an Ohtani basket or an Alvarez and Cole type basket. That is the choice really.

Maybe Toronto would be happy with Brantley this time? Too soon?
