The oil-rich Essequibo region has been in dispute since the 19th Century when Guyana was a British colony. Venezuela renewed its land claims after offshore oil and gas reserves were discovered a few years ago.
It's been NOT Venezuelan territory since 1840. And of course it was the Europeans (British in this case) that started all this. This is just wonderful, we haven't had a proper Latin American Border War in a while.
I was just making this point last night in a debate with someone else. We as humans aren’t getting more peaceful or enlightened but keep on finding reasons to go to war.
Venezuela would be better off learning how to better develop the oil reserves they already have then going after new ones. I think Venezuela already has some of the largest oil reserves in the world but everything I hear about pdvsa is some combination of corrupt/incompetent and/or shambolic.
This is fighting over resources...and we should all globally get used to it, because it's not going to stop.
