There are different ways to consume this. One is “principled leaders refuse to tolerate antisemitism.” Another is “rich people use wealth to stop poor people from supporting other poor people in ways the rich people don’t like.” I’d want to know what specific speech they’re talking about to decide.

    CANCEL CULTURE everywhere.

The Right was right. Cancel culture is like a virus, it eventually spreads and infects everything.

Universities should be left leaning and accepting of all idealogy, that allows their students to learn and to make up their own mind through critical thinking.

    That is a good thing.

The vid in the link has more grilling besides Elise's shrill voice.

White House weighs in university presidents’ remarks at antisemitism hearing: ‘Unbelievable’

White House on Wednesday scolded the presidents of Harvard University, the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) for their responses a day earlier at a House on antisemitism hearing.

Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) asked all the presidents if a call for the genocide of Jewish people would be considered harassment under their campus policies.

None of the trio directly answered the question, saying it would need to be investigated by the school or depended on the context and how pervasive the calls were.

“It’s unbelievable that this needs to be said: Calls for genocide are monstrous and antithetical to everything we represent as a country,” White House spokesperson Andrew Bates said.

“Any statements that advocate for the systematic murder of Jews are dangerous and revolting – and we should all stand firmly against them, on the side of human dignity and the most basic values that unite us as Americans,” Bates added.

Press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre later on Wednesday said that calls for genocide “unacceptable” and “vile,” adding that if someone who worked in the administration made comments like that, they would be called out

“Statements that advocate for the systemic murder of Jews are appalling and we should all stand against them,” she said. “I should not have to be saying this at the podium.”

The schools have faced widespread backlash for the comments, with Republican presidential candidate and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley threatening to pull the schools’ tax-exempt status.

Harvard has tried to backtrack with a new statement from President Claudine Gay clarifying her position on the issue.

“There are some who have confused a right to free expression with the idea that Harvard will condone calls for violence against Jewish students. Let me be clear: Calls for violence or genocide against the Jewish community, or any religious or ethnic group are vile, they have no place at Harvard, and those who threaten our Jewish students will be held to account,” Gay said.

The Hill has reached out to UPenn and MIT for comment.

It doesn't take a genius to see college logic on safe speech vs liberal speech break down over the past decade, so it's hugely disappointing that colleges haven't tackled this when society elevates and supports them to be free thinkers.

I still respect and admire the old ACLU ideal on speech (terribly exploited nowadays), but there are too many issues crippling independent thought and research right now. Think tanks are skewed and directed by billionaire funded interest groups then disseminated across different institutions and media channels. Universities trying to cater to a profit margin and desperate enough to hire eye catching professors like Kendi teaching an ideology that is more a cult of personality or of conviction.

Hopefully this crucible gives them more introspection before they lose both sides. Cons want to take them down and libs want a higher standard of consistency.

See this is a similar take to what I was bringing up the other day. The sudden switch of tone and hypocrisy stands out to some.

A defense of the responses at the hearing:

At least according to the hate speech rules at Penn, the “it depends” response is actually (and somewhat surprisingly) appropriate. One can speculate what the response would have been if “Jews” was replaced with “Muslims” or “LGBT” or “Black People”. If she answered the same, I’m quite sure the outrage would be coming from a very different sector of the population.

Internet outrage over bad-faith congressional political actors is almost always overblown. You can replace ‘bad-faith congressional political actors’ with ‘memes,’ clips on social media,’ and so on. This relates to cancel culture.
