I think if you probed the "ceasefire now" left on this point, they'd be hard-pressed to find any Israeli military action they'd condone after October 7. Given the density of Gaza, Hamas' proclivity to hide among civilians, and use infrastructure like hospitals as de-facto shields, I don't know what pro-Palestinian protestors expect Israel to do after the attacks. There doesn't seem to be a good way to fight a war in Gaza, and I would argue that Israel has certainly exacted its pound of flesh in retribution, but their enemy's tactics shouldn't prevent Israel from retaliating at all for October 7.
And by the way, @trustme, if someone were to attack Muslims for just being Muslim or looking Muslim and I were around, I would defend them as well.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but my family in Germany has said that part of the country's education system focuses on World War II and the Holocaust in the hopes of identifying what caused Nazism and preventing it in the future. It's something that the US never did in the wake of slavery, the Civil War, or Reconstruction and we still see the impact of refusing to fully own up to past sins.

Yes. It's a horrible case no matter what. Israel can't let Hamas remain in power after October 7th. There will be civilian casualties no matter what. The best thing to do would be to get a coalition of nations to incentivize the Palestinians to remove Hamas themselves. Israel isn't willing to do what it would take and there may not be many other nations willing to either. But the benefits would be Palestinians who are more aware of the layout, where civilians are, and more of desire to not kill those civilians would be better positioned to do it. Also it would prevent Israel from receiving the criticism when civilians and civilian infrastructure are destroyed.
This is correct, although I don't think it was done in East Germany at all during the Communist regime. When I analyze why the far-right party "AfD" has a lot more voters in East Germany, at least initially, I think that is part of the reason. They went from one dictatorship to another and never properly learned about their history. When I grew up in the far West of Germany, we learned about this dark period of history of Germany extensively in school, we visited concentration camps and Nuernberg, and we all understood what "Never Again" meant, and our special responsibility as Germans to ensure that Jews would never again have to go through what they had to go through at the hand of Germans. Later in life, I became very close friends with some Jewish people (from South Africa and Israel) and now (by chance) I happen to be in probably the "most Jewish place outside of Israel". I didn't realize this before I moved here, but when I told someone I met professionally about where I live, the immediate question was "are you Jewish?", and now I know why. All my tennis buddies are Jewish, and I mean all of them. They are some of the kindest and coolest people you'll ever meet. Welcomed me with open arms. They do joke around a bit about me being German sometimes, but it's all very good-natured.
I do feel for the innocent civilians who suffer because of the actions of Hamas, but I trust that it will be better not only for Israeli civilians, but also for the civilian population in Gaza (and, it goes without saying, even more so for oppressed women, gays and LGBTQIA+ people in Gaza) in the longer run to be liberated from Hamas. You may not want to believe it or admit it, but the reality is that all the Arab nations around know exactly that it has to be done, and they do want Israel to win, and win swiftly and by truly eradicating Hamas. Anything they say to the contrary is lip service. It's like when Germany had to be defeated militarily in World War II to be liberated from the Nazis. It couldn't be done without civilian casualties, but the Nazis staying in power would have been worse, for Germans, for Germany, and for the world. The one thing I am worried about is how the Palestinian population can be de-programmed from the hate against Jews they have been indoctrinated with from early childhood over many generations. I hope for peace and co-existence after Hamas is defeated. But the job has to be completed first.
I have a question to @maypk and @trustme: Do you agree with the treatment of women and gays in Gaza under the Hamas regime? Do you think that their interpretation of Sharia law is how it should be?
