It's a minor irony given unis can't practice what they preach while continuing to self-promote as culturally enlightened trendsetters.

The political opposite is how libs hate religious hypocrisy inherent among the Christian Right. Even if we're no better at times, libs like sticking it to the Pat Robertson types for not following the Gospels and living with standards of how Jesus lived and preached.

Also, I don't think either side except for the fringiest libertarian or old-school ALCU Nazi defender will agree that speech like "Kill the xxxx" or "Kill all yyyy" should be unrestricted on campuses where half the undergrad attendees can't even buy alcohol.

This feels like an entirely new development in the past 5 years, though I can't say it's surprising.

You clearly didn't bother to understand what actually happened. Jewish students were getting harassed and threatened by mobs shouting for genocide of all Jews, and these schools did **** all about it. That's not free speech, that's evidently bullying and harassment.

I don’t think this is a new development as when I went to school there was plenty of issues regarding who should be allowed to speak and plenty of debates on hate speech and etc. too. There were student and university officials ten saying speakers who had worked on the Reagan administration shouldn’t be allowed to speak. And since the Intifada was happening while I was in school there were the same discussions regarding antisemitic speech by pro Palestinian students.

The difference was that social media was only in the IRC days.

As yes I’m antisemitic even though I never said any of those things have called out Hamas’ actions as atrocious.

Again free speech isn’t free speech if all it protects is speech that is inoffensive. Do you agree with that?

So when there are speakers or groups on campuses who express anti-LGBT sentiments then should they be banned if it leads to harassment of LGBT students?

You also cite hate speech in that thread and certainly calling for the deaths of a group is hate speech and your yourself argued against the danger of using that to restrict speech.

You have embarrassed yourself enough @rocketsjudoka - in your desperate desire to score some online points, you have clearly displayed that you have lost your moral compass.

    Disgusting.

This guy is the ultimate two sided argument poster. He keeps on embarrassing himself by not knowing the difference between free speech and death threats. Lol

So do you think that free speech should only apply to that speech which people find non threatening?

@AroundTheWorld - I don't understand anyone trying to say oh it's not so bad when it's a definite hostile and threatening environment with the vicious and disgusting rhetoric and the atmosphere it creates against a certain classification of people at a college ...

to say oh well what about saying "kill him at a ballgame" in which a fan is not getting into someone's personal space repeatedly and consistently is complete asinine ...

if someone can't see the difference than I feel sorry for them, and like you said, they lost their moral compass.

    Absolutely disgusting and indefensible! -
What happened to the left saying they are against hate speech to begin with? Never mind that it's gone beyond - how could any Jewish parents feel comfortable having their kids in these colleges such as Penn? I would have serious safety concerns relating to what I have seen recently and that's not right at all

@rocketsjudoka really needs to step away from the keyboard and think about his depraved lack of a moral compass.

Let me ask this. When someone says “we should root out our enemies like vermin”
Is that free speech or a death threat?

Have you been following the news brah? Some of these threats against the Jewish students or even Jews in general have been carried out. I know you’re a good guy with a good heart but you’re making my head hurts.

It's one thing what is allowed by the constitution.

But these three private schools have explicit rules against bullying and harassment, which would clearly apply here.

They just selectively chose not to enforce them.

Yes I’ve been following the news and I fully agree that there is hateful and antisemitic speech out there and that students have been harassed. I never claimed to be a free speech absolutists but do believe that free speech would include things that many find offensive like antisemitism, homophobia and etc.

I think this poster actually has a good point.

“I'm involved in some think tanks. When they discuss internally, there seems to almost be a consensus that "something needs to be done about misinformation/disinformation/hate speech".

I'm almost always the only one who says this is an extremely slippery slope.”

This thread is actually showing they slippery slope.

Of course. When you try to cancel people, you’re weaker than an IFBB pro who just got off his roids cycle. This place should be a cancel free place.
