Poll: If you are a fan of a sports team and you don't like its best player, do you...

Discussion in 'BBS Hangout' started by AroundTheWorld, Dec 5, 2023.

?

What do you do if you don't like the best player of your favourite sports team?

  1. Deny that he is the best player of the team, and keep denying it forever, no matter what

  2. Come up with trade proposals to get him outta here

  3. Disengage while this guy is featured on the team

  4. Hype up other players on the same team and hope they take the top spot

  5. Start cheering for a different team

  6. Other (explain)

I'll be honest, if KPJ had remained the "head honcho" and featured player of the Rockets, it would have been hard for me to root for them as much as I do now.

There are some instinctive biases - you quickly like a player or you don't. Sometimes, they grow on you, but more often than not, the original bias will remain. There are of course some exceptions, the ones where you hate a player if he is on the other team, but you actually like him when he is on yours...Dillon Brooks is starting to become that kind of player for me.

However, I would struggle to cheer on a team with Draymond Green on it...I just don't like the guy.

Sometimes in soccer, I have this problem when cheering on the national team - there are some players from your rival teams you basically can't stand all season long, and suddenly, you are cheering them on...

Anyway, what do you do if a player you just don't like, either for his personality or because you don't like the archetype turns out to be the best player on the team you have always been a fan of?

    Multiple selections allowed.

Basically you lose the hard fandom and become a regular, fair weather observer.

Others have family members and friends egging them on to choose a ball club, had that problem in childhood but solved it.....

I have been widely interested so it was no big deal for me.

PS: KPJ is very likely never going to be the best player on a true contending team.

Every thread is a Sengun thread. LOFs could only dream of such a scenario.

So you think Sengun is the best player on the Rockets?

It's best not to get attached to individual players on any spot of the totem pole. Defending Steve Francis taught me that. I did get less engaged on the Rockets, but that's alright.

Had I continued to be that way, I probably would have been one of those blind Harden fans. Instead, I more or less enjoyed his stint here. Despite the fact that his style of basketball was disgusting, I could see and appreciate him for what he was.

Meh, I’m in it for the team.

That said, the Texans haven’t done enough for me to become a true fan. They came close with JJ Watt but not enough. I’m a Texans well-wisher.

It's a topic that pertains to any sport or team, as you can see in my post.

I'm not sure. I need a poll about it in the GARM.

I hated Roger Clemens but rooted for him when he was in the Astros. I remember telling friends when he left that it was good so that I could go back to hating him.

James Harden would drive me crazy at times but I still kept on rooting for the Rockets. Since he’s left I have had no interest in cheering for him.

Pretty much the same here. Clemens is an arrogant *******, Harden's slow-down ballhogging iso is boring (until he makes the shot) but really his lack of defensive intensity is the worst part.

You have to keep rooting for the team. I admit that there were times if one of my teams picked up a certain player - it would make it hard for me to keep rooting for them; but I stayed the course. I think the only way that I might quit being a Rockets fan is if they got the Donkey on their team.

When you say "don't like" do you mean as a player or a person?

Houston has been pretty lucky over the years in that most of our great players have been great people too. Earl, Dream, Biggio, Watt, Altuve...how could anyone not love those guys on and off the field?

Clemens was the epitome of the "he's an a-hole but he's *our* a-hole" saying.

There's a difference between a-holes and scumbags...and like imadrummer said, Houston's been thankfully pretty low on scumbags.

    Either (or both). Just overall.

    I liked most Rockets players.

The only ones I really disliked were Pippen, Squid Williams, Royce White, KPJ (oh, and Nix). None of them were franchise players, fortunately.

Maybe (just maybe) my question was inspired by some important fans apparently not liking (not necessarily personally, but "archetype") our new franchise player for the Rockets ;).

I can get behind any player that plays with heart and wins more than they lose. KPJ flat out was not a winner and his personality being what it was just made it easier to trash the guy.

When Brett Favre came to the Vikings it was pretty funny seeing Vikings fans who hated him all those years on the Packers suddenly going out and buying Favre jerseys.
