Leftists I know are anti-Zionists, not anti-Semitic - in fact, many of them are Jews themselves lol.

In general those on the left are against things like colonization, expansionism, centralization of power, etc. Iran is no friend of the left. Neither is Hamas. There are those who are misguided, but they don't represent the mainstream. Most people on the left identify with the common man over the privileged and the empowered.

I believe there are many areas of easy confusion and manipulation by those that wish to see the alliance.

It requires a lot of generalization to even discuss, so therefore can only be partially accurate. That is true no matter which position people take on the issue.

In general, leftists are anti-colonial. They are respectful of different cultures even when they disagree. That amount of respect and anti-colonialism are not solid extremes but rather a spectrum with different leftists falling different places along the spectrum.

So being anti-Colonialism and trying to respect cultures can call for leftists to oppose those that would try force a foreign way on even fundamentalist Islamic or tribal cultures that mesh with the fundamentalism. They may still be against the oppression of women or homosexuals, but also against the forcing of those ideals by other cultures. But the level of their support and sympathy can take wide variety of actions including, donating money, vocal support, founding organizations, etc.

Some that are further and more extreme on the spectrum or less informed may also wish to simply anger right wing types, and take actions for that purpose. They may also blame the colonialism for many of the aspects of Islamic fundamentalism that they oppose. Certainly when the colonial powers are also further to the right, more homophobic, and less inclined to treat women equally, they may not see the differences between the two sides as distinctly.

This allows those who wish to generalize, demonize and dehumanize one or both groups to use this for the ammunition in their campaign.

I have NO desire to live in a majority Muslim nation..... I find Islam to be oppressive in many ways as well.

Having said that - It doesn't change the fact that Israel has oppressed the Palestinians for 75 years and is wrong for doing so.

Part of being a well-balanced person is the ability to overlook personal biases and look objectively.

Likewise - anyone that defends Hamas' actions on 10/7 lacks objectivity - but that also doesn't excuse the long-term policy of Israel in the occupied territory.

However - Israel and the Palestinians want to act as if they are completely innocent.

I would argue that any "oppression" has been necessary out of Israel's responsibility to try and keep their civilians secure. There are 2 million Arabs (mostly Palestinians) within Israel. Those within the Palestinian-governed territories evidently have largely been a major security risk for Israeli civilians.

What would you have expected Israel to do, when Palestinians from the territories wouldn't stop attacking Israeli civilians, whether that's rockets, terror attacks, etc., and when their governing bodies, whether PLO, Fatah, Hamas, etc., in one way or another have always made killing Jews and destroying Israel their top priority?

The only way to stop them from killing more Israeli civilians (including Arabs in Israel) has been to try and keep a tab on what goes in and out of these territories. And as you could see, any even slight relaxation of security measures led to more deaths of Israeli civilians (using water pipes to build rockets, Gazan civilians who were allowed to work in that Kibbutz basically spying on the Israeli civilians and telling Hamas exactly where to go and what to do to kill more people, etc.).

So what you call "oppression", I would call measures which were unfortunately necessary to try and minimize security risks.

Hi @leroy, I am curious what you think about this post? Also, I am wondering if you have actually been to Israel, and how you would define the "oppression" you are speaking of?

    (Disclaimer, I know Martin.)

My response is that I've never heard anyone, from friends, family, associates, anyone else I know who share similar political views as me say anything even remotely like that. Additionally, I call bulls*** that he's actually heard anyone use words even remotely close to that.

The "American Left" is not chanting anything like that as a whole and anyone claiming so is an idiot and a liar.

Call it what you want.... oppressors.... or the oppressed...., but Israel has not been innocent bystanders the past 20 or so years. Especially when hardliner politicians like Netanyahu use the scare factor politics to get into power.

The fact is nobody here is innocent, and most everyone has made missteps in regards to finding a way to longstanding peace. Hamas cutting off the heads of innocent babies certainly has earned themselves no right to claim to be victims here.

How we got here is interesting going all the way back to the 1940's, and the mistakes that were made. What matters though, and what world leaders need to speak out in unison about is what we do now to realize that the situation in it's current state is untenable for world peace, and actions must be taken to establish a two state solution with borders established with clear distinctions, DMZ type of secure checkpoint zones, and international law that is enforceable.

Palestine must also have the chance to enter the global economy, and have a chance at self determination. If Palestine fails at that, and reverts back to Hamas/terrorist dictatorship rule out of grievance, then the world then can react with a sober realization and be clear eyed about what type of government they have to work with.

If you are really a "Woke Leftists" then ultimately what you want is peace, and you think the way Lennon did, and ultimately what you think is just is the idea of self determination, and freedom to live in peace. That's NOT taking a stance that cutting off the heads of babies to provoke a larger global war is the way to go. Anyone that is sympathetic to that is NOT A WOKE LEFTIST.

OP is one hell of a misguided dunce.

He is infinitely smarter and more successful than you will ever be, you can google him. He is originally from Argentina, but has US citizenship. He doesn't need to make stuff up.

Some of Israel's discriminatory policies have zero to do with their own security and often are recruiting tools for terrorists and it often weakens their security.

For instance denying Palestinians water rights, to not build businesses or new wells has little to nothing to do with Israeli security.

That has nothing to do with his propaganda or feelings for moving to the right.

It isn't. It is actual Israeli regulations and laws that have gone on in various forms.

Why would the guy need to do "propaganda"? He is an extremely successful entrepreneur who is just describing his own feelings and journey when it comes to politics. One doesn't have to agree with him, but to insinuate he is just making stuff up is wrong.

Sure he can go through his own journey and explore is changing feelings. That's fine. Why would he need to make sure that he does so publicly and posts about it to his followers?
