I probably shouldn’t post this because it’s already tough to get a walk in table, but I went to a place tonight that was every bit as good as Kanomwan and Thai Gourmet were when they were at the very top of their games. For Thai Gourmet, that was well over a decade ago. The only cons are that it’s a bit out of the way for most people (it’s in EADO, and I live closer to city center). It’s a bit in the hood (and connected to a Valero gas station) and it’s small. You really need a reservation (which will probably make you laugh the first time you drive up on it. And lastly….some of my favorite Thai dishes are not on the menu. but the pros…..had to be the best Thai I’ve had in the states. Not kidding around with the spice, but not out of balance overly spicy like Thai Gourmet could be sometimes. New dishes to learn about and love, and specials most evenings. Two specials we had were the large grilled squid with spicy dipping sauce and “steamed egg Tom Yum.” Knowledgeable waitstaff (service was leisurely, but man…..you almost have to go fine dining to get decent servers these days, fun wine list and the best versions I’ve had of a few staples we always order (spring rolls and pad kee mao). This place rocks. Hence the ridiculous reviews. https://www.streettokitchen.com/
I made that recommendation in another thread. I love those guys. Great great food. They sell a Thai omelette in some market on Buffalo Speedway on Saturday mornings. Super good.
Personally. I didn't like this place as much as Thai Gourmet. But that doesn't mean I wont try it again.
Thai Gourmet was among my favorite restaurants. I didn’t realize it had been reincarnated, but randomly googled about it last week and read about Thai Garden taking over. Went there last night and it was fantastic….but nearly empty. I don’t think people realize that it’s a thing. I need people to realize it and keep it in business!
icymi: Chef won James Beard Best Chef in Texas Pole nails a review, once again!! they moved to a larger location, too.
thanks for the kind words…..since writing that, I’ve been back to Thailand, and all I can say is why, why WHY is it so damn hard to get good Thai food stateside? Most of what we see here is such a far cry from what Thai food can be. On a slightly different note, ate at Mott 32 in Vancouver yesterday…..holy cow! That was some damn good fine dining Chinese. Need to go start a diet.
Tasted the same to me. My wife and I loved Thai Gourmet and we were both really excited to have it again.
I live less than 2miles away and have never been. Make sure you invite me next time. We can split the Butterfly Pea Margarita, 1 cup, 2 straws.
Because people think what the generic American would eat ...... Opposed to they serve authentic stuff back home, and the foreigners either adapt or fly off.
