I do not think this means as much as the authors want it to. Small Newspapers were covering very little local news as it was and were mostly ads and syndicated content. The internet killed newspapers, magazines, and television. And that's just fine.

Why it matters: Most communities that lose a local newspaper in America usually do not get a replacement, even online.

I still like reading newspapers. I get the Chronicle and I local paper called Community Impact. Plus when I travel I usually grab a local paper since I find what's happening in that area interesting. Sure, I can see much of the stuff on the internet, but like the process of reading a paper (magazine, book) and I often see things I would miss doing it electronically. For the same reason, I like going to libraries... I'll spend time there looking at the magazines and pulling books off the shelves.

Here is the thing I hate most about this turnover. Old newspapers would follow the journalistic formula of a descriptive headline, the most important information in the first paragraphs, and then less important detail at the bottom that you can skip if you want to. Internet news turns it all on it's head. There's a click bait headline, then 4-5 useless paragraphs written to extend your dwell time, and then the actual news somewhere beneath the fold. I find myself starting articles in the middle and then scanning up and down from there to find the meat of it.

By the numbers: There are roughly 6,000 newspapers left in America, down from 8,891 in 2005, according to a new report from Northwestern's Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications.

most shocking thing in the whole article…surprised there’s still that many left, and even more surprised that only 3000 have been eradicated in the past 18 years

Not sure if local can really come back. But, it feels like the regional newspaper is making a come back. Things like the Texas Tribune. Also -- aside from the encroachment of social media -- there's a blurring of the lines between media. Local news is doing better on TV and radio than in newspapers, and the tv and radio stations reproduce their content on the web. So I don't think it's all that bleak. What is bleak is how we cover national news -- and that's not for lack of coverage!

It's a habit more then anything, but every Sat am I have coffee and read the sports section of the Chronicle and skim through the other parts. I also like to read actual books and not listen to audio books or read on a tablet although I may try a kindle or something this year. But I am older so ................get off my dam lawn :D

I subscribe to the digital version of the chronicle. I received the hard copy of the paper every morning until a few years ago. The delivery service became so poor I was forced to cancel.

When I was younger we received the Post every morning and the Chronicle every evening. My father told me he used to get the Post, the Chronicle, and the Houston Press every day.

Looking back now, it’s kind of impressive they could write the articles, print the paper, and deliver it to your house so quickly.

The local newspapers (some are better than others) around me are vital for local news about local government and such
