The Ethics Committee hadn't yet released findings from their investigation. I'm not sure if it was the intent, but the effect of having a vote before the Ethics Committee findings might be to blunt a more fulsome effort to throw him out later.

 

Not sure if replacing him makes a big difference now... but it does continue the conversation about how much a fraud santos is and how the republicans continue to have his occupy a House seat.

Anyway, I agree, I think, with the 25 dems who voted against booting Santos, unless they're doing it for the nakedly partisan reason that Santos generates bad headlines for Republicans. Santos has indictments in flight and an Ethics Committee investigation. Voting to expel without any new catalyst seems ill-timed and random. After the Ethics Committee officially reports gross ethical violations would be a good time to expel him -- gives a grounding without having to wait for a criminal conviction. Voting 2 weeks before the ethics report makes no damn sense.

 

It will be interesting to see if voters in his district care whether they were lied to repeatedly and about so much. Or it they will vote for him just because he is a republican.

The Ethics Committee had promised an urgent investigation and then crickets for months. The day before this vote, they announced they planned to provide results later this month. So that likely converted some "yes" votes to "no"s. But also, it forced the committee to actually do something, which may ultimately result in expulsion. Without this effort, the committee probably just continues to sit on this.

 

It has been reported that Santos is failing at fund raising. I also would be surprised if the Rs do not primary him. Santos is likely not favored in either the primary or the general.

 

A recent poll in his district indicates that

• ~78% of voters want him to resign,
• ~ 71% of registered Republicans want him gone

 

He's not just failing. He had *negative* fundraising totals last quarter because his campaign had to refund more than they brought in.

Driving the news: Santos brought in $674 in contributions in the third quarter of 2023 while refunding $17,200, giving him -$16,526 in contributions over the course of the three months, according to the filings.

 

I guess all the lying only works for some gop members, Santos doesn't appear to be with the cool kids......poor guy

 

The maga house of representatives is what santos is. Fraudulent, corrupt, and only interested in maintaining power to do nothing for the American people. Hopefully Democrats seize on this as they campaign...
