It deserves its own thread because of the precedent it makes. Ohio voters approved a constitutional amendment codifying that abortion should be unrestricted until viability (23-24 weeks). But Ohio’s GOP majority disagree with the vote and have other plans.

“Mark my word, if and when these preachers get control of the [Republican] party, and they're sure trying to do so, it's going to be a terrible damn problem. Frankly, these people frighten me. Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can't and won't compromise. I know, I've tried to deal with them.”

Ohio Republicans Say It’s Their ‘God Given Right’ to Restrict Abortion Access
Republicans in Ohio want to undermine the will of voters who approved a measure enshrining reproductive freedom into the state’s constitution

“No amendment can overturn the God-given rights with which we were born,” state Rep. Beth Lear (R-Galena) added in the Republican’s statement. Another representative, Jennifer Gross (R-West Chester), claimed the referendum had only passed due to “foreign election interference.”

As my favorite political YouTuber says, the GOP wants to rule not represent.

…and what happened to separation of church and state? If it was a Muslim saying this instead of an alleged Christian they’d be blood in the streets.

What happened to their oath to uphold their Constitution?

    Their religion is immaterial.

It's also their God-given right to ignore election results, laws, and accountability that they don't like. These religious zealots will happily take a Christian dictator over democracy and the Constitution.

North Dakota representative Brandon Prichard's reaction to the OH voters approving the right to abortion by 57-43: "Direct democracy should not exist... It would be an act of courage to ignore the results of the election." He has previously called for the states to "put into code that Jesus Christ is King and dedicate their state to Him."

I’m not surprised they did the same thing with Gerrymandering. Thumbing their noses at both a voter referendum against Gerrymandering and the OH Supreme Court.

    Each of these notches: concerning.
Taken all together: a bit terrifying, TBH, NGL, FML.

I was aware you could read at least at 1st grade level? Politicians invoking God/Allah/Mohammed never ends well for the majority of people in any society especially a democracy.

Everything is a god given right as long as you're savage enough to kill for it and get away with it

    God/Allah/Mohammad are not churches.

I don't disagree with your premise, however seperation of church and state have nothing to do with this. Church/state clause does not say a person can not root their beliefs in religion.
It simply means the Church of Latter-day saints can't run Utah.

    Carry on.

While the Separation of Church and State is important, its significance is relatively minor in this context. When you take an oath to uphold the Constitution, your personal belief in God-given rights shouldn’t empower you to disregard or override our Constitution and democratic principles.

lets expand on this. There should be no reason why anyone should disregard the Constitution and democratic principles.

Agree. And here we see an explicit disregard for those principles on religious grounds. If there are other similar grounds for disregarding those principles, we should be concerned with those as well. But I'm not aware of any (except, for cases like Trump, who isn't driven by religious beliefs but power). Historically, it's not surprising that religious zealots would hold their religious views above any other principles. What is surprising is that we give these people power by electing them.
