Give the mate more than a handful of games to figure out his niche on the team. Jock got injured in the Summer so, he may still be getting back to speed. Plus he needs to figure out how he can maximize his talent for what the Rockets need him to do to fit their vision. I’m fairly sure Udoka signed off on getting Jock, as he was already the coach when the signing happened.
I feel like this board overstates the quality of the average backup big in the NBA. Jock is fine, should continue to get better, and is locked in on a favorable, multi-year contract.
Yes, I think most of us know he was injured. I think the conversation has turned to what if he doesnt figure it out and/or recover from injury? Myself, why wait weeks or months for Landale? Why not cut somebody (Bullock?) and sign some other serviceable big in the meantime? I would contend that even if Jock were decent, adding another big would be in our best interests anyway.
What backup big averaging about 15 mins a game is substantially better than Jock? Serious question. The idea what we’d trade for a starting caliber center like Clint Capela and play him 15 minutes seems ridiculous to me. Hell, some teams with strong front courts like the Nuggets and Bucks don’t really have a traditional backup center.
How hard can it be to find a guy shooting better than 25% from 3? Serious answer. https://www.espn.com/nba/player/_/id/3146557/jock-landale
Jock is just not that good of a defender to make up for his nonexistent offense. I mean he's not even a lob threat.
Interesting, since the guy everyone seems to want -- Clint Capela -- doesn't shoot 3s. I just think we need to be realistic. I don't want the team giving up assets to replace our 8th-9th bench player on a good contract who is basically there to suck up 15 mpg.
Dont know a thing about him, but on paper (stats), he looks like an upgrade over Landale. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dewayne_Dedmon https://www.espn.com/nba/player/_/id/2580913/dewayne-dedmon
So who do you want? It's easy to say we should upgrade from Jock. It's much harder to identify a worthwhile target.
I agree with that completely. And no, I dont have a target in mind. But we pay good $$$ for guys in the Rockets FO to find these guys. I would be content just to know that they are keeping an eye out for such a guy and they havent become complacent with what we got and assume it will just all work out by itself.
Christain Wood is licking his chops thinking about playing Landale. Landale is licking his chops (or the Australian version of that) thinking about playing Christain Wood.
It's actually kind of good that he's not that good. I wouldn't risk the FO imposing him as the starting center in front of Sengun if he was any good.
