ATW, you are making this thread unreadable with so many consecutive posts of tweets. Could you spoiler them or something if you feel they need to be shared here, just so it is easier to read on a phone?

Under Scrutiny Over Gaza, Israel Points to Civilian Toll of U.S. Wars
Israeli officials say it is impossible to defeat Hamas without killing innocents, a lesson they argue Americans and their allies should understand.

    Falluja. Mosul. Copenhagen. Hiroshima.

Facing global criticism over a bloody military campaign in Gaza that has killed thousands of civilians, Israeli officials have turned to history in their defense. And the names of several infamous sites of death and destruction have been on their lips.

In public statements and private diplomatic conversations, the officials have cited past Western military actions in urban areas dating from World War II to the post-9/11 wars against terrorism. Their goal is to help justify a campaign against Hamas that is claiming thousands of Palestinian lives.

In those earlier conflicts, innocent civilians paid the price for the defeat of enemies. In Hiroshima and Nagasaki, as many as 200,000 civilians perished after the United States dropped atomic bombs to force Japan’s surrender. In Iraq, hundreds of civilians were killed in Falluja as U.S. forces fought Iraqi insurgents, and thousands died in Mosul in Iraqi and American battles against the Islamic State.

Israel insists that it is trying to limit civilian casualties in a war against a terrorist enemy, which began when Hamas killed 1,400 people on Oct. 7 in southern Israel, most of them civilians.

U.S. Bombs and the Law of War
The vast scale of Israeli strikes — along with statements from Israeli military officials saying their operational intent is for damage and not precision — has left many doubters worldwide. And Israeli leaders say the goal for the campaign in Gaza is to eradicate Hamas, an open-ended aim that some Biden administration officials privately criticize.

Over 10000 Palestinians in Gaza are reported dead in the conflict. A lot of destruction and bloodshed. I don’t think Israel is going to stop, however.

Gaza death toll tops 10,000; UN calls it a children's graveyard

    https://www.reuters.com/world/middl...steps-up-ceasefire-calls-rebuffed-2023-11-06/

GAZA, Nov 6 (Reuters) - Gaza is becoming a "graveyard for children", U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres said on Monday, amplifying demands for a ceasefire in the enclave, where Palestinian health authorities said the death toll from Israeli strikes had exceeded 10,000.

Both Israel and the Hamas militants who control Gaza have rebuffed mounting international pressure for a ceasefire. Israel says hostages taken by Hamasduring its rampage in southern Israel on Oct. 7 should be released first; Hamas says it will not free them or stop fighting while Gaza is under assault.

"Ground operations by the Israel Defense Forces and continued bombardment are hitting civilians, hospitals, refugee camps, mosques, churches and U.N. facilities – including shelters. No one is safe," Guterres told reporters.

"At the same time, Hamas and other militants use civilians as human shields and continue to launch rockets indiscriminately towards Israel," he said, calling for an immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.

It’s horrible to think about it but Israel is right that the US and pretty much every country that had fought a war has killed a lot of civilians. It’s especially true of this type of asymmetric fighting involving an insurgent group based in a dense urban area.

The sad truth of war is that civilian deaths will often outnumber the deaths of combatants.

I doubt he was thinking much and likely is just caught up in the emotion of the moment and /or doing it for social media attention.

Unfortunately these days a lot of people do a lot of thoughtless things because of social media. I’ve frequently criticized the “hey look at me!” Type of protests like throwing soup at artwork. There’s always been an element of causing outrage through protests by going after symbols. I think social media has just made it worse.

For as awful as the Russian Ukraine war has been, it sounds like the actual civilian casualties are quite low versus military casualties. But Russia did abduct a bunch of Ukrainian kids which is just as bad. Upwards to 700,000 children have been “re-located”.

I’m also going to state that antisemitism including threats and violence towards Jewish people is happening. At the same time so is Islamophobia. Just the other day an Arab student was struck in a hit and run.

Muslim student struck in Stanford hit-and-run calls for love, compassion, from hospital bed
Abdulwahab Omira, an Arab Muslim student at Stanford University, has released a statement after he was struck by a car Friday afternoon in what authorities are calling a hate crime.

“As I lay in my hospital bed, grappling with a reality I had never imagined, I reflect on the importance of spreading love, kindness, and compassion in a world that seems to be steadily succumbing to hatred and prejudice,” Omira said. “This ordeal has solidified my resolve to advocate for love, understanding, and inclusivity.”

Omira claims the driver, whom he described to authorities after the incident as “a white male in his mid-20s, with short dirty-blond hair and a short beard, wearing a gray shirt and round framed eyeglasses,” had expressed hostility toward Muslims before.
