Jailing an ex-president and future pres candidate is a fundamental crisis for any nation, let alone ours based on faith in the Constitution and traditions such as peaceful transitions of power.

It's a bad precedent that Trump is daring others to break.

This is one reason why empires of old made defeated political rivals drink poison.

It sets an even worse precedent to allow insurrection inciting politicians to get immunity from jail or prosecution. The scope of all his trials goes well beyond simple political rivalry. You can't just give an out of jail free card to men who commit multiple felonies in both their political AND personal lives. If you do, then your leaders won't be any better than the guys in authoritarian or dictator type regimes. You also can't just give a free pass for life to everyone who used to be a President.

It's a tough web as MAGATs are also hiding behind fundamental speech rights along with a extremist militant wing that aren't shy to brandish weapons in protests,

There was a lot of pressure to criminalize Nixon and Bush post presidency but the future implications for setting that precedent are generally slippery slopes away from democracy. If republican voters were more sensible and credible in larger cities, I don't think we'd have this infestation of corruption among their politicians as many of these bozos shouldn't even survive past primaries.

Trump's crimes go well beyond free speech. As for a radical extremist right wing following, well you can't let those types take control. If they incite fear or make threats about getting violent in defense of their "chosen one" then they are no different than extremist terror groups anywhere else in the world, and need to be dealt with, not appeased.

It helps if you have a pre-defined narrative that you can fit it into.

Trump appointee who assaulted Capitol officers on Jan. 6 sentenced to nearly 6 years

A former Donald Trump political appointee at the State Department who tried to storm the Capitol and assaulted law enforcement officers on Jan. 6, 2021, was sentenced to 70 months in prison on Friday.

Federico Klein was arrested in March 2021 and convicted of eight felonies as well as misdemeanor offenses by U.S. District Judge Trevor McFadden, also a Trump appointee, in July 2023 following a bench trial.

McFadden said that Klein's conduct was "shocking and egregious," and suggested his sentence would have been higher had Klein not already been on home detention for two years. Klein, McFadden said,
was "intent on breaking into the building," and said he was "astonished" by Klein's behavior on Jan. 6.

The government had sought 10 years in federal prison for Klein, saying he "was likely motivated by a personal benefit — namely, continued employment as a political appointee — when he attacked the U.S. Capitol.
" They pointed to messages he sent ahead of Jan. 6 — “Hell yea I’m going. I’m a Trump appointee" — as well as the fact that he "took time off from work at the State Department to volunteer to travel to Las Vegas"
to investigate the false claims that the Trump campaign was making about mass voter fraud.

We see just on this page some trying to spin Jan 6 as being some big deep state fake yet so many of those convicted are being done so by their own words.
