Those white Christian values have always been left up to interpretation. Back in the days those fine white Christian "Southern Gentlemen" had no qualms about coming home from church and lashing or raping a slave. There are plenty of far right Christians who don't want their blood dirtied by other races. When you get those types in power, and they spread racial fear, hate and bigotry enough, then they are fueling the fires of a bunch of ignorant people supporting changes like that.
