Unfortunately mainstream media has failed us too. Ultimately it comes down to people wanting instant gratification. There is no time for investigative journalism. Matthew Perry OD'ing is an example.
Yep. Putin's "heart attack" (sic) is another! Social media has dragged trad media along with it, competing for the all-important clicks.
It’s interest earned from frozen assets. The moral justification is there, but I’m not sure how they legally justify it. Also, it seems no one actually read the FT piece. There is only 3 billion in earned interest, so the statement of 1 billion per month based on that article is BS, but on par with the typical social media postings.
You're right, I didn't read it. Maybe if I did, I'd find the moral justification you refer to. The assets are frozen but still belong to someone else. The interest that money earns, therefore, also belongs to them. If you're going to take the interest, you may as well take the asset and stop pretending.
I'm with you there. The earned interest is still someone else's money and so I don't know how they legally justify it and didn't really care to read much into that either. My post was more about the original post that 'passed on the' BS that Ukraine is getting $1B per month from this (and the silly follow-up that it's about profit). If they actually read the FT article referenced, they would know that tweet was BS (but again, it's on par with social media now-a-days). Morally justified is pretty obvious though - Russia is the illegal aggressor and should pay the price.
I’ve noticed that Newsweek has become a bit weird lately compared to what it used to be, which was a magazine very similar to Time Magazine and it’s direct competitor. Now? Well, Time hasn’t been what it once was for at least a few decades now, and what’s called Newsweek reads like someone bought it, possibly for fun or nefarious reasons. Speaking of Time, I have several Vietnam War era issues in a box at the top of one of my closets. Yes, a much different and better rag back then during the 1960’s. Anyone recall the Is God Dead? issue? I’ve got that and a few others that might be considered “significant” issues. After I moved to Austin in 1980, my late mother continued to give me a year’s subscription for my birthday every year, as she had for many years. By 1980, Time (and Newsweek) was a shadow of what it once was. Around 1982, I finally asked Mom to stop giving me the subscription and she said, bless her heart (and how I miss her), “But Deck, I want to give you a magazine. What could I send you?” I laughed and said, joking, “How about Playboy?” “Okay!” She exclaimed, pleased that I had suggested something she thought I’d like. For over 20 years, she sent me Playboy. I was lucky with my parents. They were both wonderful. The stories I could tell.
I have a related story, in college, I got a call from my mother asking if I had seen the latest edition of Penthouse magazine. I was like, uh...what? She told me one of my high school girlfriends, the one I took to Sr. Prom was in the Madonna issue.......WITH ANOTHER GIRL !!! We had a great time at Prom, and dating but it could have been so much better if I knew about this other girl thing......lol God Bless my mom and Susie in Penthouse. Good times. DD PS. I put the prom picture and her Penthouse picture up at the apartment - and had several drinks bought for me from fraternity brothers....lol
Playboy, in addition to its other charms, did have excellent writing, particularly about Jazz and Politics. who can forget the Jimmy Carter Lust in My Heart issue? Sadly, all these magazines have gone downhill; even The Economist is a shadow of its former self.
