The Best Analogy I can think up to tie this into WWI: China is the German Empire. Upstart economy, making the current hegemon nervous, and wants a real place at the table. Iran is Austria-Hungary. Bark is bigger than bite, insignificant, but a pain in the ass. Russia is the Ottoman Empire. Holdover empire that is rotten to the core. US is UK/US. Global hegemon and the world leader. When the US gets involved conflicts go global. Israel is Serbia. New country on the block, will fight. UK is US/UK. France is still France. But so is Germany. and Poland.
