Republican's have convinced their idiot voters that they are on the right side of a culture war that must be won at all costs. Because of that no action, no matter how embarrassing, will ever lose their vote. They don't care about any actual legislation, they just hate gender identity, brown people and anything that isn't god fearing. Republicans can't accomplish anything at this point because the Trumpers run the party, and they would rather watch America completely collapse than compromise. I keep waiting for the floor to finally drop out of this embarrassment of a party, but it just keeps getting more absurd. I would love nothing more than to go into a voting booth and not be morally obligated to vote Democrat like I have for the last decade.
Great example of how the leopard ate the face... ‘I killed him': How Trump torpedoed Tom Emmer’s speaker bid Just when the congressman thought he had neutralized Trump, the former president lowered the boom. https://www.politico.com/news/2023/...ump-torpedoed-tom-emmers-speaker-bid-00123329
What an embarrassment the current GOP is. The world is watching and waiting for help that's needed from the US and needing congressional approval...and these idiots are taking what's going to certainly be a month to select a new Speaker. I realize the answer to this next question is "yes, they are that stupid" but I'm going to ask it anyway. Are they so f**king stupid that they don't realize they've already lost the House next year? The longer this goes on, the more competitive seats they're going to lose. If this gets to the point that it creates a shutdown because there's no House to vote, the wipeout that will occur next year will be historic.
The problem is that many don’t believe they lost the House. Many of them probably believe that the majority of the country actually agrees with them and that they are right on the issues. Many of them also probably believe that any compromise, especially with Democrats risk them getting primaries and losing their office.
Even if the Republicans lose the majority I do think that isnt a big worry for many. Several including Jim Jordan have shown no interest in actually government. For some like Gaetz and MTG it might actually help with fundraising if they are seen as the uncompromising minority rather than trying to actually run the House.
Its very possible having the House sit dormant for a few months is also a desired outcome for the maga republicans. They have used up all their anti-woke bills, and they know that are unable and disinterested in actual governing so just doing nothing and avoiding helping Americans is just fine with the maga crowd.
Speaker Kevin McJordan? https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/ c...ker-nominee-live-updates-rcna121674#rcrd22879 McCarthy floats partnership with Jim Jordan as assistant speaker Ali Vitali and Scott Wong Amid the impasse, McCarthy is floating a plan that would reinstall him as speaker and make Jordan, a conservative Trump ally, the assistant speaker, according to three sources familiar with McCarthy’s pitch. Asked why the idea — which lacks key details, like how it would be enacted and whether it could even gain enough traction to happen — was being floated now, a GOP lawmaker replied: “We’re desperate.” While the idea might seem far-fetched and it has not been pitched broadly within the GOP Conference, it is being discussed among some Republicans after Emmer, the third GOP nominee, dropped his bid. A source briefed on the idea likened it to the Speaker Nancy Pelosi/Assistant Speaker Katherine Clark arrangement that the Democrats had. “Kevin speaker, Jordan assistant speaker,” the source said. Two GOP lawmakers described McCarthy as having melted down in conference meetings today because, they said, he is losing his ability to handpick a new speaker. He had two “outbursts” behind closed doors today, the sources say, that were about his objections to quickly moving to a nominating vote for Rep. Mike Johnson, R-La., the runner-up to Emmer, the lawmakers said. “This isn’t how you elect a speaker!” McCarthy said in the room, a lawmaker said. A McCarthy spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
They are so strong in their districts that they have no personal gain by actually making the country work. In fact, it hurts them. This is the definition of dysfunctional.
I would argue just the opposite - in Europe and elsewhere, the far right has outsized influence with like 10-15% of the vote by positioning themselves in kingmaker roles and making themselves indispensible. Israel and Netanyahu's ability to continue as PM is just one example of it. Trumpists don't have power because they are a rigid minority - it's because they are a very large minority, and a substantial majority of the GOP at this point. In a winner-take-all environment, rigid minorities become mostly irrelevant, which is why the far-left (and previously the far-right) spend so much time complaining about how no one listens to them.
The running joke... stefanik congratulates each speaker designate who promptly loses, so she is now known as a curse...
this beckons the question As one of the GOP leaders in the House, why hasn’t Stefanik been nominated for speaker ?
Look at the margins. If you can cobble together a group of 2-5% you can control Congress. Same probably goes for whatever purple state houses there are.
They don't control Congress, though. They can stop things on the off-chance that Congress is perfectly divided (as we're seeing now), but they can't actually accomplish anything they want to do. The entire last 7 years, the GOP at the federal level has basically accomplishing nothing legislatively outside of tax cuts, which are super easy to pass. And if either party gains a few seats in the next election, all the crazy people's influence is gone. The crazies only have power right now because (1) Congress is evenly divided and (2) GOPers are so scared of Trump that they aren't willing to work with half the members of Congress. If these were just 10 random crazy tea party people on their own, none of this would be an issue. But in Parliamentary multi-party systems, this fluke is actually a feature. Governments are often forced to partner with the crazier elements to even form a government, which means the crazies get minister positions and policy guarantees, etc.
One, she is a woman. As it turns out, her assigned role as gop house conference chair she has to nominate and then congratulate the designees.
What a world we live in to have Trump weaponize the Apprentice for the 2nd in line for the Presidency...
