Since all nine of the speaker candidates signed the amicus brief challenging the election, I guess they are all somewhat suspect, but... I guess of the 9 emmer might be the least offensive.

Twenty six republican votes against emmer. So unless emmer and the republicans have a deal in place with Democrats, it looks like they aregoing to have to come up with another candidate...

I don't see how Emmer will be elected, you have to many fractions of the gop and they cant agree on ideology let alone someone to lead ALL of them. And now you have the cult leader weighing in and Emmer is now labels as a RINO, MGT and Gaetz cant allow that. The gop cannot even compromise with their own members and there supposed to compromise with the dems on behalf on the American public? This is a joke.......with such a slim margin for error, I am not sure they will be able to pick anyone. Hurry up and pick someone so you guys can then go shut the government down right before the holidays which will be the cherry on top of this **** sandwich

This is very much a function of the ideological purity "no compromises, ever, under any circumstances" under-siege mindset that Republicans started promoting so hard about 20 years ago to look uncompromising and tough.

Republicans have self-selected for candidates that would rather watch the whole thing burn to the ground around them than compromise on even the smallest thing.

Refusing to compromise on anything is literally their idea of the pinnacle of virtue, and you are seeing what that looks like when taken to its logical conclusion. Be careful what you wish for, you might get it.

Looks sexy to angry voters during the election, completely unworkable when implimented in the actual practice of governance.

Nailed it. The Tea Party nonsense comes back to haunt. You can’t govern well a republic without compromise. When you see the unwillingness to do so as a badge of honor, you’ve missed the point.

In a winner take all duopoly, a rigid minority can have extraordinary influence.

So, the counterpoint here would be that the tea party and neo-tea party (read: MAGA) and its forefathers ( Reagan and Newt) has been extremely successful in reshaping the Republican party (and America).

emmer withdraws, a few hours after he was nominated. At this point the maga republican house is simply embarrassing themselves and their candidates.

Wonder how soon congress dips below zero approval? I know someone like mccarthy will claim that this is all "inside baseball" or sausage making and people don't care, but watch what happens as the deadlines start approaching...

It started longer than 20 years ago. I'd say it started in 1996 with Newt. Maybe not to the extent it has become, but Gingrich is HEAVILY responsible for the current climate.
