I do not think they will bring back Maldy. Unlike letting Dusty walk, there will be no national backlash for not resigning the worst offensive and defensive catcher in baseball, regardless of what a few pitchers think.

In fact, plenty of national writers already mention that they don’t understand the Dusty-Maldy love affair. It is only “we’re smarter than you” types like Chandler or Schwab who pump it up. And the pitchers may care, but they won’t stop pitching. Chirinos was JVs personal catcher while Maldy sat on the bench. He moved on then, and he’ll move on again.

And Brown (and I suspect Crane) is crystal clear on the real value Maldy brings, because ultimately it either shows up on the field or it doesn’t. And it doesn’t.

Speaking of results, I see no reason to let him be Framber’s catcher. Framber has melted down in almost every start in the second half, always with Maldonado catching him. Maybe doing the same failed thing over and over and over isn’t a great idea?

JV survived just fine with a rookie 22 year old catcher in NY. He can call his own games let’s be real.

I think Click fought Dusty pretty hard about things, and that might have led to him not being GM here anymore. I don't get the sense that Brown has nearly the appetite to fight Dusty about really anything - instead he prefers to mewl in interviews about his "hopes" and "wishes" but ultimately everything is Dusty's call. Thus, while I think Dusty was more constrained in the postseason with Click, I wouldn't necessarily believe that now with Brown. Plus, Diaz hasn't been allowed to gain familiarity with some of the SPs during the regular season so at this point there is some sense in not rocking the boat and simply rolling with Maldy.

Dude, chill . . . talking about next year . . . Justin is as open minded as anyone, why do you think he keeps working on his mechanics to unlock progress? Maldy may be back next year, he may not be. Justin will. Somone will catch him.

Make adjustments against Monty and JV getting through the first couple of innings clean. That's the game within the game. I'm thinking if they're going to get to JV, it'll be early before he really locks in on his delivery. Hoping the guys pull off another big win today.

    Go 'stros!!

and if maldy is back I'd bet it'll be him once again

JV works on adjustments and mechanics because he's a HOF pitcher. that's what greats do

If that were gonna happen then it would have happened this season. If Dusty and Maldy both return, then Maldy, no matter how poorly he plays, will catch 80% of the games.

nah definitely not. Diaz being a rookie wouldn't allow that to happen

What will change between now and a few months from now that will magically qualify Diaz in Dusty's eyes to get an even split of PT?

I meant the lack of plate discipline, not the swing itself. I might have used the wrong term. Baseball Savant has him in the 1 percentile for worst chase rate and walks.

I think if it was about experience, then he would have allowed Diaz to gain more experience this season. He plays Maldy because he thinks Maldy is a better player at catcher than Diaz. Part of that is probably because he doesn't understand/believe in pitch framing and thinks it doesn't matter one lick whether a catcher can hit or not.

you're under this false impression that it's all Dusty's call on who the pitcher's want as their catcher
