It doesn't matter how big our C is if we are playing the switching defense. Collins scored almost all his points when we switched Alpi onto a guard and he feasted on brooks and Jabari or whoever else got rotated onto him etc. not sure how having a bigger center would help that cause. You can watch the entire clip here and the points he scored. Not one time did he actually post up Alpi and get a bucket. Even when he got offensive rebounds it's cuz he was switched onto smaller players. That's just what we have to deal with if we are gonna switch everything. You need to calm down and not overreact to one preseason game. Not to mention it was probably the worst offensive game I've ever seen Alpi have as he missed bunnies all over. Whole team couldn't shoot straight. Alpi normally dominates Collins. Collins was probably trying extra hard after the poster he got put on last year. remembe
Tonight, Boston started a lineup of Jrue Holiday Derrick White Jaylen Brown Jayson Tatum Kristaps Porzingis and looked great. “Size” isn’t our problem.
Right he's acting like he dropped 50 and 20 and we lost by 20 in a regular season game. Its preseason no one knows what we will look like in the regular season. Its the typical knee jerk Rockets fan that are fare weather fans and change emotions about the team by the second. Anyone who expected us to be a playoff team this year is silly anyway. We will likely not be a playoff team and thats ok, I just want to see some growth in the regular season.
Collins was burning everyone that was guarding him last night. Not sure if the stats are available, but I don’t think most of his points were against Alpi (there were several against JGreen and Jabari). Alpi had several steals, multiple deflections and at least one block so his stock defense was decent (team defense by him and all the starters left a lot to be desired though).
He’s a starter, but should be playing power forward where his size is more acceptable for defensive purposes. Just a bit too small for center. We can live with him there but not if we’re playing grandpa Jeff or that Jock guy as a backup. We need a legit big who can block shots and rebound. Guys like Nurkic, Ayton, Reed, Turner, Mobley, Williams, etc. who can block and defend. We’re in BIG TROUBLE when our small centers play Wembleya this year if we couldn’t stop Zach Collins!!!
No worries….I drank the Kool-Aid and thought we could compete for a playoff spot until the reality of last night. It won’t be just Zach Collins, small ball makes us weak against any teams with size. A tall team like Cleveland will kill us on the boards. We’ll struggle with defensive rebounding all year with the center team of Sengun, Jock, and grandpa Green.
Its not about Height the Rockets are basically a new team with a new system and still very young it will take a couple of years to make the playoffs unless we are extremely lucky. You can hope for luck but dont count on it.
all this talk of Zach Collins who was killing us, but Sengun actually looked much worse on offense than he did on defense the other night…he got swatted like 3 times and had 3 turnovers in 17 minutes
I don't even think we are that small all things considered. Jabari is probably considered tall for a PF, he just needs to fill out his body. Amen is tall for a PG, Tari is tall for a SF. FVV is small. Sengun is on the small side, but really not by much. Tate is small (but imho plays taller than he is). Brooks looks small, but if he really is 6'6 as he is listed, I would say thats average for a SF. Green is fine. Cam is fine. Bullock is fine. Landale is fine. Green is fine (as a PF). What we are missing is strength and experience. And that's pretty common for a team, that probably gives 6 players that came out in the last 3 drafts, significant minutes.
The only guys we could get who would truly satisfy the "we need a traditional shotblocking center" crowd are also penciled-in starters. I'm not ready to give up on Sengun. Give him at least until the trade deadline as a focal point of the offense and let's see where we're at. If your expectation is that we make the playoffs this year, you're getting your hopes too high. We still have a ton of players under age 23 and no real stars, and the west is extremely tough.
Finally someone who SAW the game. Sengun had a bad offensive game. He actually looked decent on defense, but missed a few assignments. I do think when Alpi comes out we need a legit defensive center to take his place, hopefully that’s Jock.
Please stop talking about Ayton and defending. He's trash. Got exposed in the playoffs each year so the team had to dump him. Why would it be different here. Dude 7 foot but plays soft might as well be 6 foot.
