Freedom of speech should be upheld…but so is freedom of consequences for those actions. Imagine ruining your life by saying something dumb
US Aid to Israel: Details Emerge of $2 Billion Package | Time As Israel prepares to launch a likely ground invasion into Gaza, the Biden Administration and leading members of Congress are crafting an American aid package of roughly $2 billion in supplementary funding to support the nation’s war effort against Hamas, multiple sources familiar with the matter tell TIME. The funding would go toward replenishing Israel’s stockpile of interceptors for its Iron Dome missile-defense system, artillery shells, and other munitions. ...
it only takes an individual to release a statement. One has already resigned from the group. The people responsible for releasing the statement do deserve punishment for their actions.
As many of you know, on Saturday I posted about my cousin's niece, Adi Kaplon-Vital, who'd been abducted from her home in Israel and was missing. Last night we received terrible news. Adi was murdered by Hamas. Adi was a mother of two young children. To have her life ended by terrorists has been devastating to her family, and mine. As a family and a Jewish community, we're obviously all in mourning. And what makes that process so much harder is the media culture we're living in. To see people celebrate terrorism and try to justify the brutal kidnapping and murder of innocent women and men, children, babies, and the elderly has made me wonder whether the whole world has gone mad. Human tragedy is human tragedy. It doesn't matter your nationality, religion, or political viewpoint. This is a time for mourning, not celebration. My heart is heavy with the loss of life of innocent Israeli and Palestinian civilians. I read something this morning. Of all the words I've seen trying to make sense of what's happening in the world, this one resonated with me in the most profound way. Thank you to Judianne Grace, an indigenous Canadian artist, for your words of humanity and comfort at this most devastating time. And thank you to the countless friends and colleagues who have reached out. Your support means more than you know.
Ok fine, the British called it Palestine. That is not the point at all. My point is that until the British partition plan, there hadn't been an independent Palestinian state. Before the British it had been an Ottoman possession. The British actually issued the Balfour Declaration at the same time that they were given control of Palestine and Transjordan so it was very clear that they were going to partition the area and create a Jewish state. But as an independent country, Palestine lasted less than a year. Egypt, Israel and Jordan promptly annexed different parts of the proposed Palestinian state. I'm not saying that the term Palestine is invented but in historical terms, the Palestinians were never given any agency by Israel and the Arab States (and previously the British and Ottomans). We can all agree that the British didn't do a very good job of partitioning colonial possessions in the 1940s. This doesn't justify expulsions or the deny the right to a Palestinian state. But view the history through the lens of the time. Colonialism was still a thing and Palestine had simply had a revolving door of foreign rulers. I think getting into debates about pre 1947 history is entirely irrelevant at this point. It serves to create a fake moral standing for absolutist positions around Israel as occupiers of the whole area which doesn't serve the interest of Palestinians. At some point, the discussion has to shift away from that stuff and move towards the conditions on the ground and the compromises required to create a viable Palestinian state today. And that requires making huge concessions around territory that Palestinians might feel entitled to based on pre 1947 history but it serves no purpose today.
“Actions are solely Israel’s fault” is extreme and stupid. I can’t imagine what compelled them to sign their name to it college in kids in general are not very smart, here’s proof even Harvard kids aren’t
I was wondering when Trump would weasel his way back into the headlines and he didn’t disappoint- going right at Netanyahu and reminding everyone he assassinated a bad Muslim himself in Iran.
He's such a blowhard and certainly didn't do it himself or even by ourselves. Kurds helped. Syrians helped.
Attacked Israel? Yeah hmm no, also stop posting candidates that are nowhere near Trumps hemisphere in the polls... Also, Trump has always been pro Israel and finally recognizing Jerusalem as the capitol of Israel... Look, if you want to make the long as stretch that's fine....
Yeah this sounds a bit like splitting hairs. At the end of the day....nearly a million "Palestinians" were dislocated by Israel and many non combatants killed. Prior to the Zionist movement, Jews and Arabs lived side by side in peace. I don't blame the Zionist movement for wanting to create a homeland for the Jews after everything, but it was done in a messy bloody way. Historically, Israel doesn't hold the high ground here. Neither does the Arab states who first invaded and then invaded again essentially creating the occupied territories and subjecting Palestinians to the current state of affairs. It's a messy entanglement. And while everyone can agree that Hamas is a terrorist organization that needs to be disassembled, there is still no solution. Causing 2 million people to suffer is just playing into the hands of extremists. Peace isn't easy. It most likely is impossible today. But Israel has the upper hand and it takes courage to find a longer term peace. The only way to stop the fighting is for the UN to get involved in the West Bank and Gaza. Problem is that this is something Israel will never agree to because it essentially stops expansion. This is a well known position of the right wing parties in Israel. What does it say that Israel isn't willing to end violence in exchange for giving up on expansion?
