The problem with that is Mills was a 3rd round pick and BY was the #1 overall pick in a pretty good draft class so far taken over Stroud and Richardson, not to mention the price of what Carolina gave up to get him
CJ is playing so well that he's making his peers look bad. I feel bad for the Panthers right now it's rough. Basically every knock on Bryce so far has popped up and they spent so much draft capital to move up. Feels like they are in the same spot we were when we got rid of Bill, sucking and having no draft capital to really get out of it. Kind of crazy the talent they traded away too like who trades away Christian McCaffrey in his prime? I had to bold that because they literally traded away a generational talent who showed no signs of wanting to be traded away. I couldn't be a Panther fan right now. I do think its far too early to call him a bust but I will say this... The NFL and American Football is one sport where you can just see it. How many guys turn it around instantly without flashing? I see Panther fans make a lot of excuses for Bryce and it reminds me so much of all the excuses we'd make for Carr or Mills or whoever. The fact is. The QB has the most impact on a game than any other position. The QB can make his Oline look a lot better than it is, there's a reason why guys like Rodgers or Mahomes can perform no matter what you put at the line its because they can make pre-read snaps, call out blitzes, and have good presence to where it feels like they are always getting the ball out in time. It's a reason these guys always have a lot of 'weapons' because they make it easy to play with them. I'm not saying that you can't make your QB better if you are a star WR or RB, of course you can. If you put prime Andre Johnson or prime Steve Smith on that Panthers team no doubt Bryce would look a little better but what I am saying is him looking bad is partly on him. If the OC is calling conservative plays its probably because they don't trust him with calling more complex stuff or he's not picking it up. I guess I've learned over the years that a good QB always raises the floor of a team. No knock on Bryce for not doing it, maybe he turns it around before the season goes on and I have nothing against the Panthers, they are completely irrelevant as a Texan fan...but if my rule is in the NFL you give things 3 seasons, MAX, and you move on. Mostly 2 seasons. I mean we know this, look how good this QB and Coach combo look already in 4 games vs what Lovie and Culley put out there? It really shouldn't take too long to figure out something ain't working in this league and to move on from it.
Don't they have wunderkind Josh McCown as his QB coach? Like the guy that was NFL head coach material with only a few years of coaching his kid in high school? Like what's going on? His scouting Youtube vids were so on point.
Didn’t McCown want stroud? Or liked him the most.. man can you imagine the media in Carolina running with that and the fanbase.. oof.
I was stationed in San Diego when Ryan Leaf made his start. I hated having to watch Chargers games. He had 2 TD and 15 INT that rookie year. It was horrific. When they played the Colts that year it was only one of 3 games the Colts won. The Colts were even worse than the Chargers that year, but ended up beating them that day. It was bad enough that the Oilers had left Houston, but having to watch the Chargers and the Colts was the black icing on the spoiled cake. Leaf had 0 TD and 1 INT and Manning had 1 TD and 1 INT. Borefest!
Bryce Young is an amazing athlete. He is mentally tough and smart. But his size tells me he’s going to have issues, because QB get hit and size protects and cushions players to a noticeable degree. Stroud is more prototypical and based on the plethora of data, should handle the grind and hits substantially better per the data. I preferred Stroud over BY, but BY has all the tools to be special; it’s just QB have to stay on the field which statistically speaking a smaller guy may be fighting an uphill battle.
At the NFL level, saying Bryce Young is an "amazing athlete" is questionable. He sure hasn't looked like one. His elusiveness against SEC teams hasn't translated to the NFL, so far. Not to jab at him, but how can a QB be an amazing athlete when he can't even execute a QB sneak? For the record: I've liked Bryce Young since high school. He is a quality young man and I truly wish him the best. Rookie QBs often start slowly, so let's give him a few more games. At this point, his ceiling might seem lower but I doubt he ends up a bust.
How is BY an “amazing” athlete? I see that said on occasion and I don’t get it. Young isn’t a multi-sport beast like Kyler Murray. He’s a good scrambler, but I wouldn’t say he has blazing speed. He’s obviously very small and really doesn’t have an incredibly strong arm — Stroud has the much bigger arm IMO. To me, Young’s strengths tended towards the intangibles (poise, playmaking, etc.), but in the NFL, intangibles only go so far if you don’t have the baseline physical tools, and unlike a guy like Kyler Murray, Young doesn’t seem to have the freakish athletic tools to overcome his diminutive size.
Just finished season 4 of "QB1" (Young, Richardson and Deuce Hogan). Hard not to like Bryce after watching. I came away most seasons actually wishing for the failure of some of those kids (I'm DEFINITELY looking at you Spencer Rattler) because they were such insufferable, cocky, entitled douchebags. Bryce was really down to earth with the perfect mix of confidence and humility. He even came out of decommitting from USC unscathed. I'll be surprised if he turns out to be a complete bust barring injuries.
Its too early still, and obviously no comparing players only the situation, but it could when the Bears traded a bunch of picks to draft Trubisky, and Trubisky got drafted before Watson and Mahomes?, Young being selected before Stroud and Richardson.
Yes, I feel like both CJ and Richardson could be top-level QBs, and Carolina may have picked the wrong guy.
I wouldn't doubt Bryce ends up more of a Case Keenum than a Mahomes type QB in 2 years. Only time will tell. You never really know at this point. First 3 NFL games: Young 503 YDS 2TD/2INT Keenum 822 YDS 7TD/0INT Case went downhill after that. His first year (7 games) was 1,601 YDs 7 TD/5INT We'll see how Bryce ends up after his first 7 games.
IIRC, after his rousing first 2-3 games, defenses solved Case by max blitzing every play because he couldn't figure out hot reads. That dogged him for a long time even after he left the Texans. I don't think understanding defenses or coverages is the main problem for Bryce.
