If Trump was so good on the border why was he always talking about caravans of migrants coming? Why couldn’t he get Congress to fund the wall? He had to move money from military housing programs to pay for what little of the wall he could build.

Yes there are large numbers of immigrants coming to the border right now but the border wasn’t actually closed under Trump.

You said it, Trump got very little support on the wall. It was "racist" to try and keep people outside of the country remember. Immigration will never disappear, people will always get in despite who is in The White House. But we cannot just sit here and act like Trump's border wasn't a million times better than what we are seeing now. Biden outright does not care, if he did we wouldn't be having this conversation. Look, its okay to not agree with something Biden does if its hurting this country. If Trump got into office and this was happening I'd be saying the same thing.

I was lead to believe Trump was exaggerating those claims.

But as I said before, we need to loosen up the Mexico border and help Mexico tighten up Mexicos southern border. We need to develop Mexico.

Except Trump couldn’t get his border security through the Republican Congress. Also relatively speaking it wasn’t that much better. That’s why he kept on talking about caravans and in 2018 there was also talk of a crisis at the border and of the border states being overrun.

You’re viewing this through partisan lens. Trump’s record on the border wasn’t much better than Biden’s. All it wa was crueler and more wasteful. Actually Obama had less border crossings than either Trump or Biden.

I did some quick research and will agree tht border crossings now are much higher than they were under Trump.

That said under Trump they were higher than under Obama. So using the reasoning here then Trump was far less effective in the border than Obama.

What this really shows though is that US presidents don’t really have that much power to unilateral control the border.

My apologies to you and I'm sorry that the US education system has failed to give you an understanding of how laws are made and funded in America. It's also the media's and social media's fault to heap all praise and blame on presidents. That's not how our system works.

The law says (I'm summarizing): it doesn't matter if you come by plane and overstay your visa, it doesn't matter if you take a boat and get out in Florida, it doesn't matter if you jump a wall, dig a tunnel, or just walk up to a border checkpoint. None of that matters because once you see an American official you say like Micheal Scott, "I delcare asylum!!!!"

So the law encourages immigration from crap countries because 1) America is great! and 2) America says, "come here, and we might let you in if you declare asylum, assuming you can't get a visa (most people can't get a visa)."

The bankruptcy/asylum doesn't happen right away. There's a time and a process. And within that framework is room for variation of policy, hence the impact of presidents. That stated, presidents don't make law. Repeat, presidents don't make law. One more time, presidents don't make law. Every Trump policy adopted by Biden was struck down as unconstitutional by the conservative Supreme Court.

And yes, unless Trump becomes King like you want (and that's a fair argument), the system will stay broken. The wall would eventually be struck down as unconstitutional because Congress controls the purse. Now how much of the wall could be built by a president before the Supreme Court rules on the merits? Not sure. But from a pure separation of powers standpoint, that wall ain't going to be completed without massive constitutional vioaltions.

Correct too, and it's not just Mexico, it's also Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama. We need cooperation/assistance/trade/investment, whatever it takes to help countries help us.

Great! Biden is off the hook. Immigration problem solved.

The president isn't a dictator. His role is to lead the country, as a whole, to solve problems. Trump was a shitty president and Biden isn't running his presidency.

I fully agree. The western hemisphere has so much untapped potential. We don't need to turn S America into a wasteland like China has become, but there is massive amounts of resource and labor.

So you are saying border crossing has been on the rise for the past 10 years and Trump unlike Biden actually tried to get it under control, and then got called a racist for it... Yup, that's where my vote is going. Biden does not care about the border. Like it or not, Trump is for border control.

And Biden has deported more people who crossed. It's broken either way, and the most effective Trump policies are now either unconstitutional (Title 42 because COVID is over) or rescinded because Mexico needs to help (MPP). Those are just mitigations though. The main reasons are push reasons, because many countries in South and Central America suck. They all don't suck, but many do. And their suckage and failures push people to the USA because the USA sucks much less.

So if Trump becomes president again, if he doesn't have congressional help, and if other countries continue to suck or suck more, and if he doesn't have international cooperation, then he can't do anything to "control the border" unless he tears up the Constitution. Direct you ire towards Congress too, please. They suck too. And by the way, I'm much more conservative on immigration than the Biden administration, but I'm also an institutionalist, and don't see any solution put forth by conservative states (continue Title 42 or force MPP) as a legit solution.

Legit solutions are Congress funds or changes the laws, plus massive international cooperation with Mexico and the rest of Central America, because all these migrants are illegally crossing through multiple countries.

Every time you think a libertarian is somehow smarter than a republican you realize their just as dumb as MAGA. The only difference is their richer than the typical maga but the iq remains the same.

"Pandering for votes" is what Trump did by inciting a riot based upon conspiracies. You're an idiot dude seriously. The "DNC" just had the best midterm performance of any president in decades.

    Go touch grass

Instead of looking at things presidents have no control over like crossings look at the actual law and policies he's put in place. The system and policies he has in place are tougher today than they were under trump.

This is a indisputable fact but MAGAts don't like facts or truth. They like vibes aka their in a cult

Solutions like opening up more processing centers in Colombia and Mexico so folks don't show up at the border. Things like getting Mexico and Panama to deport migrants and getting colombia to up their security along their border.

There no magical switch that biden can flip. He's kept trumps policies while getting more countries to help with the flow. Not sure what folks want

It has to start with a president that want's to fix this problem, that's not Biden. Biden has other worries and agendas to push. Whether Trump gets help from congress that's another hurdle but I rather be there than to be where we are now. I haven't cared about how many people are being deported, this is like having a pest infestation in a house and the pest control guy saying he has killed many many pests instead of making sure the home is sealed and treated from the pest in the first place. (Not saying immigrants are pests, just an example)

South and Central America are a long way from not sucking, the U.S cant wait for these countries to offer better opportunities to their people in order for our immigration crisis to go down. However, eliminating corruption and crime can help these countries maintain their people and offer better opportunities to its citizens. This is where El Salvador is actually succeeding. You take away the crime and people are starting to invest in the new found opportunities of industry and tourism. Developers are starting to move in to build resorts, investors are buying up beach front property to rent. American food chains are building restaurants. These are jobs and growth in what was a crime riddled country with people fleeing by the thousands every day to escape crime. So now we have a formula that works and can maintain more people in their territory.

But democrats in general do not agree with Bukele's process, they feel he is in violation of human rights so there is no way that a democrat led country will try and support countries that are trying the same system El Salvador is. This means corruption and crime will continue to reign in these regions and people will continue to make the long trip here.

Securing the border in this country and cutting down crime are two of the most important thing's a presidential candidate should be pushing in 2024. Working with other countries do the same would also help. But when the current president and political party is against secure borders and reducing crime everyone suffers.

That's good for El Salvador. And sure, "wanting to change" or some vague wanting it more is a general improvement. But America is still 1000x better than El Salvador when it comes to opportunity. Most people ain't fleeing failed Venezuela and stopping in El Salvador, they keep illegally passing through. So the US has to get El Salvador to help the US. Biden actually has done this with Panama, Colombia and Mexico. It's a constant changing international landscape where the US needs great foreign diplomacy + investment/trade etc. Improve Mexico, El Salvador, and the rest of Central America, then get their help to prevent Venezuela and of course, their own migrants from going north. The American politicians (Democrats and Republicans) don't talk about this because it's easier just to show propaganda like illegal crossings or suffering migrants. Trust me, 99% of the population doesn't know or care about Bukele. The American government can work with him.

More important than a president "wanting to fix the problem" are the institutional constraints preventing presidents from violating the law. The law says ANYONE can claim asylum. Not everyone gets asylum in the end, but everyone gets to be processed, and depending on your status, that process can be a quick deportation or a slow deportation no deportation, or a really slow deportation that is practically being allowed to stay because the system is underfunded.

Presidents are not allowed to create laws to strike down that process above. There are tweaks that could be made and policy changes that could be implemented, but nothing a president does, Trump/Biden/Obama/Bush/anyone, can go against the law. The people working for the Trump admin had creative innovations that were all challenged in court. The most impactful policy innovation, was using the old Title 42 rule, but you can't do that anymore unless there's another COVID. SCOTUS struck it down, which was the right ruling if you believe in the separation of powers regime ascribed by the US Constitution.

So sure, wanting it more or having tougher rhetoric is fine for politics, but is not enough to impactfully change things long-term. You need all those other things we've been discussing: international development, international cooperation, congressional funding, and new statutes passed by congress.

I personally think homeless folks are a bigger issue in America than immigrants.

A wall stops no one. Unless u are willing to arm the border patrol and give the order to shoot to kill like the north Korea border, folks are just gonna cross over regardless. Folks desperate enough aren't gonna wait in line.

Trump wall was stupid especially when it stopped no one and wasted tax payers money when he claimed Mexico was to pay for it. A simple ladder can bypass

I recently re-read an old commentary about the Gang of Eight's comprehensive immigration reform bill that died in the GOP-controlled House back in 2013. This was the last attempt at substantial, comprehensive immigration reform by Congress. The bill made it through the Senate and Obama was ready to sign it into law. However, the House Republican leadership did not allow a vote on the bill.

At the time, I was not entirely convinced by the commentary's arguments, but revisiting it now, its points ring much truer. The "losing their country" to immigrants anxiety have only grown more intense and extreme.

The (Real) Reason Why the House Won't Pass Comprehensive Immigration Reform | Brookings

[ ... all the good reasons under conservatism for supporting this bill ... ]

Why, then, do many House Republicans oppose comprehensive immigration reform, as presented in the Senate bill?

It’s because House Republicans aren’t motivated by true conservatism. Rather, they represent constituencies haunted by anxiety associated with the perception that they’re “losing their country” to immigrants from south of the border.

The Republican Party is 89 percent white, and 97 percent of Republican House districts in the 113th Congress have white majorities. Moreover, 67 House Republicans won seats with the support of the Tea Party. And people who are highly identified with the Tea Party are anxious about Latino immigrants taking over “their” country. In some instances, Tea Party groups are leading the charge against comprehensive reform.

No if you look at the graphs there was a decline in birder crossings under Obama it spiked under Trump
On 2018 and then plummeted during COVID in the last year we’ve seen it return to a massive high.

If you believe that Presidents solely have the power to control the border, whether they’re called racist or not, then yes Biden is doing a poor job but compared to Obama then Trump did a poor job. So you should look to a president that did what Obama did.

Frankly I think many Republicans don’t want the immigration issue solved and push unworkable solutions like the wall becuase it plays well to the base.

It’s also likely as we see with many other issues that the current crop of Republicans don’t understand how Congress works.
